Giant donated 200 hams to the Maryland Food Bank in Halethorpe last week. Founded in 1979, the food bank gathers and distributes food for the area's needy population, inlcuding children, the elderly and at-risk individuals.

ShopRite shoppers and other Baltimore locals filled an MTA bus full of food and other non-perishable items faster than any year before, according to Mix 106.5 DJ Jon Boesche. Boesche and fellow radio personality Maria Dennis were on hand at ShopRite Saturday evening thanking generous shoppers for donating to the 19th annual Stuff A Bus food drive for the Maryland Food Bank. “I haven’t seen anything that denotes a recession or hard times. This bus has filled up quicker than any years past,” Boesche said, participating in his sixth Stuff A Bus event. He was cut off by a woman wanting to say hello after contributing an entire grocery cart full of just-bought food items. The woman handed six yellow bags to two Calvert Hall student-volunteers …

New $10,000 system donated by AT&T to Halethorpe-based charity.
Maryland Food Bank unveiled a new $10,000 network at its Halethorpe headquarters, which was donated by AT&T and its suppliers, CSI and Communications Electronics. Previously, “dead-zones” in the 93,000-square-foot facility hampered communication by employees and visitors to the building, forcing people with cell phones to step outside in order to return phone calls. The enhanced Internet network at the food bank’s headquarters covers offices, volunteer training rooms, a community kitchen and warehouse storage areas, according to the charity.

Kids Helping Kids program collected 462,497 pounds of food and raised $120,814 in donations.
Students from throughout Maryland who participated in the Maryland Food Bank's "Kids Helping Kids" program were honored on May 30 at the Halethorpe-based nonprofit. Now in is 22nd year, Kids Helping Kids is a partnership between Maryland Food Bank, Maryland State Department of Education, Harvest for the Hungry as well as local soup kitchens, pantries and shelters, according to the organization. This year, 515 schools participated in the campaign. Students collected 462,497 pounds of food and raised $120,814 in monetary donations, food bank officials said. Patch editors from around the Baltimore-Washington region volunteered Thursday morning at the Maryland Food Bank in Halethorpe. Patch vows to donate five work days (hence the "Give 5") every year to allow editors to volunteer at local charities and nonprofits.
