Maryland General Assembly Notebook 2013

Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

VIDEO: 'Ball Boys' Talk Super Bowl Predictions, Ravens, Randy Moss & the MVP

The gentlemen of Robbie's First Base in Timonium share their thoughts on the Super Bowl.

The Davis men seldom agree when it comes to sports. And that's the way we like it. This week, however, they are united in their belief that the Ravens will bring back a Super Bowl trophy to Baltimore. For the uninitiated, Robbie Davis, Sr. and Robbie Davis, Jr. are the stars of Ball Boys, an ABC pawn-style reality show filmed at their memorabilia shop Robbie's First Base in Timonium.  Looking around the shop on West Ridgely Road, one could make the argument that the Davis boys could retire on their signed helmets, balls and posters should the Ravens beat San Francisco Sunday. Patch dropped by the stop Friday to chat with Senior and Junior about the game itself, Randy Moss's controversial comments and who they think will be the Super Bowl …

Quoth The Ravens

Flacco Still Feeling Out Twitter

It's safe to say the Ravens quarterback and his PR team are still cautiously testing the social media waters.

That video made me laugh out loud. If possible, it's even worse than his radio commercials! "Dude. That makes me sound crazy." You said it, Joe!   more ›

Quoth The Ravens

Is Criticism of Flacco Off Target?

A weekly look at tweets by and about the Baltimore Ravens.

Joe Flacco can’t catch a break. Even in a week after he stood in against a surprisingly tough Houston Texans pass rush while still throwing for 305 yards and leading the Ravens to a 29-14 win, it only took a couple minutes of searching to find one of the fourth-year quarterback’s detractors. “@RealSkipBayless claims that Ravens as a team not sold on Flacco as their QB. C'mon Skip... Don't show up at any Ravens bar,” Lance Beasman wrote on Twitter. The tweet, of course, was referring to ESPN analyst Skip Bayless, who’s rarely had nice things to say about Flacco. That’s fine, of course. Bayless is paid to pontificate on the sports world and offer opinions that start conversation. But as someone who follows the Ravens closely, I just don’t …

I think Joe brought a lot of criticism on himself by declaring himself a top 5 quarterback. He's a really good qb but not yet in the class of Manning or Brady. People want to always throw out stats and how he has won more games than any qb starting his rookie year. But if you watch him play he looks lost a lot. Walt, Peyton was Peyton in year 2 and Brady won a superbowl the first year he started.   more ›

You Said It: Should Women Serve in Combat in the Military? (With Joe Flacco)

While the Pentagon knows that women account for 14.5 percent, or 1.4 million, of active-duty service members in the military, it's also hanging on to some old-fashioned ideals: None of them are allowed to participate in direct combat.

A majority of Americans believe women in the military should be allowed in combat, according to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll. Yet in Iraq and Afghanistan, 25,000 female soldiers, or about 10 percent of the United States' entire forces there, have not been assigned below brigade level. Those units are assigned primary objectives that usually involve direct combat, according to the Post report. A commission recently recommended that the Pentagon lift the ban in a report called "Representation to Inclusion: Diveristy Leadership in the 21st-Century Military." So, what do you think?

You Said It: Will the Government Shut Down? (With Joe Flacco)

If the United States government shuts down Friday, tax refunds won't go out, workers will have to stay home, museums will be closed -- the list goes on. Here's what you're saying.

Got a Hot Tip?
