The college will offer a service in which students do people's taxes.
If you’re interested in getting your taxes down, CCBC Catonsville may be the place to visit. The CCBC Community Tax Prep Program will be taking place once again this year, as accounting students will help do income taxes for any individual with an annual income of $60,000 or less for free. This will take place on the Catonsville campus on March 20, 27 and April 10 from 2-4 p.m. in the Library (Y building), room 326. Those participating need all 2012 tax records and receipts, Social Security cards for all (including dependents), W-2 and any other tax forms, copy of most recent (2011) tax return and direct deposit information (routing and account number) or voided check/deposit ticket. This is the 12th year for the program.
The 12th Annual CCBC Women's Expo will be held on March 16-17 at the school's Catonsville campus. "Women Mean Business” will be the theme of the event, which is set for 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. in the school's gym (the L Building) at the Catonsville campus, according to a release posted on the school's web site. It will be sponsored by the Community College of Baltimore County's Enterprise Institute and the Women's Expo MD and will feature more than 150 exhibitors from women-based businesses. In addition, there's also going to be motivational speakers, business finance and business start-ups workshops plus crafts and jewelry, holistic health and fitness displays. "Violence: As American as Apple Pie" will take place on Feb. 13 at CCBC Catonsville.
CCBC will be hosting four forums on its Catonsville campus that will discuss violence in America, with the first coming this week. The Social Sciences department at CCBC is going to examine "The Challenges of Violence in American Society Today." The first forum takes place Wednesday at 3 p.m. and is called "Violence: As American as Apple Pie" with Dr. Sheri Parks, an associate professor of American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park. She's also the author of “Fierce Angels: The Strong Black Woman in American Life and Culture." The other forums are on March 6, April 17 and May 1. Jones visit next month is in celebration of Black History Month.
Van Jones, a clean energy and human rights pioneer, will be coming to CCBC in February as a guest lecturer for the President's Distinguished African-American Lecture Series. Jones will lecture at 11:15 a.m. Feb. 21 at CCBC Catonsville's Q Theatre. His talk will be based on his 2009 bestseller The Green-Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Solve our Two Biggest Problems. TIME magazine picked Jones as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2009. In addition, Rolling Stone magazine named him as one of "12 Leaders Who Get Things Done. Winter breaks are ending at colleges and other institutions.
The winter holiday will be ending this week for local public and private schools, as well as colleges. Baltimore County Public Schools (bcps.org) are scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, after being closed all last week for the winter vacation. Mount St. Joseph (msjnet.edu) is going to start again on Thursday, Jan. 3. In terms of colleges, both UMBC (umbc.edu and CCBC Catonsville (ccbcmd.edu) are going to begin their winter sessions on Wednesday. Just like the elementary, middle and high schools, UMBC and CCBC Catonsville were closed all of last week and are set to be shut down until New Year's Day on Tuesday. For the colleges, the winter sessions last until late in the month of January.

Sophomores and juniors can learn more on Dec. 12 at the school in Catonsville.
The Commnunity College of Baltimore County, including the Catonsville campus, is going to have programs available for high school students interested in taking classes. High school sophomores, juniors and parents can find out information about the Parallel Enrollment Program (PEP) during some upcoming information sessions at the school, according to a CCBC news release. This will allow high school students to get college credits that they can use after high school. The CCBC Catonsville Foundation is going to host a "Holiday Lights" open house for the community on Dec. 1 The event, to be held in the Hilton Mansion on the CCBC Catonsville campus, will take place from noon to 3 p.m. The open house will feature activities for adults and children—including face painting, craft stations, balloon art and more. Tours of the Hilton Mansion also are going to be offered. The Hilton Mansion is an early 20th century, Georgian-revival mansion farmhouse, according to a CCBC news release. Center is a place for veterans to provide support and information for peers transitioning from military to civilian life.
Veterans attending Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville now have a place they can call their own – a new Veterans Services Center – which opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 8. The center is a place where student veterans can connect with their peers and explore college and community resources, and support each other during the transition from the military to civilian life, said said David Glover, president of CCBC’s Veteran’s Association. “This is by veterans, for veterans,” Glover said. “I feel at home. I can go in and talk with someone.” The new center is one of three planned for the college. A center opened last fall at the Essex campus with another scheduled to open at CCBC Dundalk in the spring. There's a new bird flying at CCBC Catonsville.
The Community College of Baltimore County announced revamped branding for sports teams at their three campuses—the Cardinals of CCBC in Catonsville, the Lions in Dundalk and the Knights at Essex. The new mascot art will be rolled out on uniforms and signage over the next three to five years, but according to officials, the new art is already making appearances on practice uniforms and new spirit wear will soon be available on the campus bookstores. Officials said in a press release that the aim was to have a fresh, consistent look among the three campuses.
