A series of concerts in honor of the 30th anniversary will be held next week.
UMBC is going to help the Baltimore Dance Project celebrate its 30th anniversary next week. The school, located at 1000 Hilltop Circle in Catonsville, will host concerts of the Project on Feb. 7, 8 and 9, according to a press release. These will be the first dance performances on the stage of the school's new Proscenium Theatre in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, the release states. Artistic directors and choreographers Carol Hess and Doug Hamby will lead the way with principal dancer Sandra Lacy set to be featured. Hess is the UMBC Department of Dance chairman and associate professor. Hess serves as an associate professor of dance at UMBC while Lacy is a faculty member in that same department. Dr. Charles Brown, who has been on the job for 24 years, works his last day in the post June 30, but will still be a UMBC employee.
Dr. Charles Brown, director of athletics, physical education and recreation at UMBC, plans to retire June 30 and move to a different position at the school. When Brown steps down, that is going to finish a 24-year run tenure where UMBC has grown across the board into a stronger Division I program. The school was just getting started in that area when Brown took over. Brown has helped put together a strong program of Division athletics at UMBC, according to a press release from the school on Tuesday. During his tenure, the school has won 46 conference championships and had 29 appearances in NCAA Championship competition in the last 15 years. According to a report, Rich Flemming was shot and killed in Philadelphia this past weekend.
Rich Flemming, who played one year of basketball at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was shot and killed on Sunday in Philadelphia. The 24-year-old Flemming was shot three times, at before 6 p.m. Sunday, according to a story in the story in the Fairfield (CT) Minuteman. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at the Temple University Medical Center. The story said that Philadelphia police had made an arrest, but the information on that wasn't available as of Wednesday morning. Flemming played for UMBC in the 2008-09 season after transferring from Fairfield. He averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 23 games as UMBC made it to the America East championship game where it lost to Binghamton in March 2009. UMBC dismissed …

The winter break is over for the local college students. CCBC-Catonsville and UMBC will start their spring semesters on Monday. At UMBC, residents are moving back to campus in the next few days to prepare for the start of the spring schedule. There are also changes to places such as at the the library and bookstore. Both will have extended hours in the spring. Check the school's website for more information with the bookstore and library. Check the CCBC website for more information on the spring semester. The spring semester will go through mid-May at both schools.

Baltimore resident Charlotte Robinson was charged with felony theft for misusing a university credit card for personal purchases.
A former University of Maryland, Baltimore County employee pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge stemming from claims she made nearly $7,000 in personal purchases on a state-issued credit card. Baltimore resident Charlotte Alexis Robinson, 50, pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft, according to Attorney General Doug Gansler's office. “When public employees abuse taxpayer money, it erodes the public trust in government,” Gansler said in a statement. “This conviction and sentence will ensure the reimbursement of all public funds and hopefully serve as an example that defrauding taxpayers will not go unpunished.” Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge Mickey J. UMBC beats Stony Brook before a record crowd of 2,905 at the RAC Arena Wednesday afternoon.
On weeknights, UMBC usually plays at home. But one of its more popular basketball programs comes the starting times are shifted. The popularity showed again Wednesday when the Retrievers took on Stony Brook in a "Midday Madness" game where they brought in hundreds of local elementary and middle school students. They helped make up a record crowd of 2,905 at the RAC Arena and watched UMBC top the Sea Wolves, 70-59. The crowd was loud and raucous, and it certainly seemed to help the injury-plagued Retrievers, who needed some help after losing three straight, close games. This will be the 35th year for the summer camps.
UMBC's Summer Day Camp starts registration for this year's sessions. The school will be "celebrating 35 years of programming this summer," according to the press release sent Wednesday, and the camp began the January registration by co-sponsoring the school's women's basketball game against Stony Brook. The game is at noon Wednesday, and will be televised on ESPN3. Fans got UMBC Summer Day Camp frisbees at the game, which also featured special promotions for the large number of local elementary and middle school students. Discounts for the camps are available for those who register early and make payment by Feb. 14. There's also discounts for siblings and UMBC employees. Winter breaks are ending at colleges and other institutions.
The winter holiday will be ending this week for local public and private schools, as well as colleges. Baltimore County Public Schools (bcps.org) are scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, after being closed all last week for the winter vacation. Mount St. Joseph (msjnet.edu) is going to start again on Thursday, Jan. 3. In terms of colleges, both UMBC (umbc.edu and CCBC Catonsville (ccbcmd.edu) are going to begin their winter sessions on Wednesday. Just like the elementary, middle and high schools, UMBC and CCBC Catonsville were closed all of last week and are set to be shut down until New Year's Day on Tuesday. For the colleges, the winter sessions last until late in the month of January.

Caringi gets another award, as does Liam Paddock
UMBC's Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall/Calvert Hall) earned the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Offensive Player of the Year honors for soccer, the conference announced Thursday. The honors were from UMBC and ECAC, according to a news release. Caringi is the second UMBC player to win this award in the past four years. Levi Houapeu also won this honor three years ago, it states. This season, Caringi was named Striker of the Year in the America East. His 14 goals and 32 points led the conference, and Caringi stands 13th in both total goals and points, according to the release. Retrievers will play several tough teams at home and away
UMBC announced its men's lacrosse schedule this week, another tough slate of games against some of the top teams in the nation. "We will play an extremely aggressive schedule in 2013," said UMBC coach Don Zimmerman in a press release from the school. "Playing five of our first six games on the road, including four games at Loyola, Fairfield, at Maryland and at Hopkins in 11 days, the Retrievers will no doubt be 'battle-tested' going into the always competitive America East Conference games beginning at Hartford on March 30." The season starts with a road game at Robert Morris on Saturday, Feb. 16 before the Retrievers come back home a week later to take on Rutgers. Then the fun begins.
