UMBC Prepares For America East Basketball Tourney

The women are the No. 3 seed in this week's tournament, while the men come in at No. 6.

UMBC's basketball programs are headed to next weekend's America East basketball tournament in Hartford.  The women finished the regular season with the No. 3 seed. UMBC lost to Binghamton last Saturday and finished with a 6-10 record in the conference, ending up in a four-way tie for third place, deadlocked with Stony Brook, New Hampshire and Vermont. But the America East web site said UMBC gets the No. 3 seed becaue of it had a 4-2 record against the other three teams tied for third. Stony Brook (fourth), New Hampshire (fifth) and Vermont (sixth) are the other seeds. UMBC will meet Vermont Friday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Former UMBC Basketball Player Killed

According to a report, Rich Flemming was shot and killed in Philadelphia this past weekend.

Rich Flemming, who played one year of basketball at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was shot and killed on Sunday in Philadelphia. The 24-year-old Flemming was shot three times, at before 6 p.m. Sunday, according to a story in the story in the Fairfield (CT) Minuteman. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at the Temple University Medical Center.  The story said that Philadelphia police had made an arrest, but the information on that wasn't available as of Wednesday morning.  Flemming played for UMBC in the 2008-09 season after transferring from Fairfield. He averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 23 games as UMBC made it to the America East championship game where it lost to Binghamton in March 2009.  UMBC dismissed …
