A 2012 college teaching position held by Councilman David Marks, while legal, should have triggered an amended financial disclosure report.
Baltimore County Councilman David Marks said Thursday that a 2012 teaching job at a local university should have been part of his required financial disclosures. Marks acknowledged the job and failure to file an amended report last year with the Baltimore County Ethics Commission during an interview. "It was an oversight," Marks, a Perry Hall Republican, said after being asked about the job. The undisclosed teaching job as well as two previously disclosed consulting positions do not appear to violate county law. Marks said the teaching job will appear in disclosure forms that he has already filed that will be made public next month. Following the interview, Marks issued a statement by email: "As soon I was offered a three-month teaching …

Comptroller Peter Franchot and Gov. Martin O'Malley want President Maravene Loeschke to "come down here" to explain how the men's baseball and soccer teams were eliminated.
The cancellation of two Towson University athletic programs has resulted in the delay of a construction contract related to a university building in Harford County. The state Board of Public Works Wednesday delayed a decision on the contract until university President Maravene S. Loeschke can explain events surrounding the cancellation earlier this month of the men's baseball and soccer programs. "I'm pretty disgusted by what Towson [University] has done with recent events concerning their athletic teams," Comptroller Peter Franchot said, referring to what he called the "bizarre decision" to disband the teams. Loeschke and university Athletic Director Mike Waddell said earlier this month that the decision to end the men's soccer and …

Hillcrest Elementary School won the event held last weekend and will go on to the state finals.
Hillcrest Elementary School won the elementary school division of the 2013 Baltimore County Public Schools' Black Saga Competition, held last Saturday at Randallstown High. This event has students answering over 800 questions about the African-American experience. It starts in the fall each year when students begin to compete against teams from their own schools and counties before eventually moving to the state finals. That's where Hillcrest will be going now. Hillcrest also won the elementary school division last year. In this year's event, Hillcrest's Team 1 is the team that captured the title. West Towson's Team 1 took second place while West Towson's Team 2 was third. Sudbrook Team 1 won in the middle school division. The Maryland …

A representative for the Center for Community Change said more than 700 letters of complaint have been sent to the Towson University president's office.
A national service organization has called on Towson University President Maravene Loeschke to denounce the creation of a White Student Union on the campus. "We see this as a racially divisive group, and the news of this was very concerning to the communities that we serve," said Jeff Parcher, director of communications for Center for Community Change. In an email, Donna De La Cruz, a press secretary for the organization, wrote that more than 700 letters against the White Student Union from a series of petitions on Change.org and SignOn.org have reached Loeschke's office. The Washington, DC-based organization aims to assist low-income people, especially minorities, in 40 states. Matthew Heimbach, former president of the now-disbanded …

An email was sent out to the university community on Wednesday.
A person at UMBC is suspected of having tuberculosis, according to a letter sent to the campus community. School health officials are working with the Baltimore County Department of Health to obtain for further testing for the person, who is isolated, according to Director of University Health Services Jennifer Lepus. University officials did not confirm whether the person was a student, citing health privacy laws. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that causes coughing, chest pain, bloody sputum, weakness, weight loss, chills, fever and night sweats. University officials sent a letter to the campus community Wednesday about the infected person. Although the infection is contagious, it is highly unlikely the general student population …
