Meet Capt. Irwin, Wilkens Precinct Commander

A 20-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department, Capt. Douglas Irwin brings a well-rounded law enforcement background to the new command of the Wilkens Precinct.

He's been on the hostage negotiation team, worked on a drug and violence interdiction team, worked at the 911 emergency call center, and most recently commanded the Internal Affairs Division. On Monday, Oct. 22, Capt. Douglas Irwin assumed command of the Wilkens Precinct, which is covers a diverse swath of southwest Baltimore County, encompassing Catonsville, Arbutus, Halethorpe, Lansdowne and Baltimore Highlands. Capt. Irwin Assumes Command of Wilkens Precinct

New precinct commander was former head of Internal Affairs Division.

Capt. Douglas Irwin has assumed command of the Wilkens Precinct, taking over from long-serving Capt. John Spiroff, who was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division. Irwin is a 20-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department. He joined the department in 1992 after graduating from Catonsville Community College with an Associate of Arts degree in 1988 and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland College Park in 1990. As he was promoted through the ranks, Irwin was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division, the Community Drug and Violence Interdiction Team, the Criminal Intelligence Unit, the 911 Center, and the Patrol Division. AIA Holds Crime Summit

Meeting at Arbutus United Methodist Church discussed crime and other problems in the community.

Several dozen people gathered at Arbutus United Methodist Church on Sept. 30 at a meeting organized by Arbutus Improvement Association to discuss crime and other problems that affect the quality of life in the community. After words by Delegates James Malone and Steve DeBoy, Officer Tom Wareheim of Precinct1/Wilkens presented data on crime trends in the community—most of which had declined from the previous year, except for certain categories such as theft from automobiles. Wareheim discussed ways that some crimes against property can be prevented, and encouraged those in attendance to sign up for free home security inspections provided by Baltimore County Police Department. Police Blotter: Bandits Steal Cleaning Supplies from Hillcrest Park Building

The following is based on information provided by Baltimore County Police Department.

July 26: At around 3 p.m., an unknown suspect entered a fenced-in yard of a residence on the 3700 block of Annapolis Road in English Consul through a rear gate and took a steel door, seat cushion swing, 20-inch patio table, wrought iron table, fire bowl, three radiators, a lock and chain, and a scooter. July 31: At some time since 3:30 p.m. the previous afternoon, an unknown person broke into a shed at Riverview Elementary School, but nothing appeared to be tampered with or stolen, according to police. I have a friend that lives on 4th Avenue and has for 45 years, the neighborhood was always been very nice and for the most part it still is and there are a lot families and older people that have lived there for many, many years. 'National Night Out' Events

Tonight is the 29th annual National Night Out Against Crime.

Tonight is the 29th annual observance of the National Night Out Against Crime, an opportunity for residents, police and elected officials to stand together for safer neighborhoods. Last year, more than 37 million people in 15,000 communities across the U.S. participated in the event, according to the organization. Several events are scheduled in southwest Baltimore County: Circle Terrace Apartments block party with McGruff the Crime Dog, Lakebrook Circle from 3:30-6 p.m. Halethorpe Civic Association block party and ride through the neighborhood with McGruff the Crime Dog, Halethorpe Community Center and park at 6 p.m. Kensington Community Association and Citizens on Patrol block party on College Avenue from 6 p.m. to dusk.

Police Blotter: Dog Deters Baltimore Highlands Burglary

The following is based on information provided by Baltimore County Police Department.

July 22: At some time since 8 p.m. on July 18, an unknown person entered a vacant residence on the 5500 block of Ashbourne Rd. in Arbutus and destroyed an air conditioning unit, rear kitchen window, two basement doors, ceiling tiles and wall panels. Nothing was stolen. July 25: At some point since 8 p.m. of the previous evening, an unknown suspect entered the yard of a residence on the 2900 block of Pennsylvania Ave. in Baltimore Highlands and took a dirt bike after cutting the chain that had been securing it. Three Juveniles Charged in Arbutus Burglary

Three city youths apprehended May 18 on the 1100 block of Linden Ave.

Three city teenagers face charges after being arrested May 18 by police officers responding to a report of a burglary on the 1100 block of Linden Ave. in Arbutus. According to police, at around noon a Linden Avenue resident observed three juveniles in the fenced yard of a neighbor. The resident scared off the youths before they took anything, and called the police. Officers who responded found the three in an alley nearby. As the suspects were taken into custody, a grey bicycle in the possession of one of them had been taken from the fenced yard of another house on the same block of Linden. Police Blotter: Man Arrested for Attempted Burglary

The following information is provided by Baltimore County Police Department.

April 24: A Baltimore man was arrested for attempting to break into a residence on the 3100-block of Freeway in Riverview. According to police, Daniel Lamont Wise, 36, of the 3000-block of Huron Street, was arrested after being observed attempting to gain entry by kicking and prying the front door. Wise is described by police as the brother of the victim's boyfriend. Wise was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree burglary. April 25: At around 9 a.m., an unknown person pried open the door to a residence on the 2900-block of Lakebrook Circle in Lansdowne and took a television set.
