Students speak of life lessons from late scholars program director, colleagues speak of a loving friend.
Hundreds of students, alumni, faculty and staff filled UMBC's University Center ballroom for a noon memorial service to celebrate the life of LaMont Toliver, the director of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program and assistant dean of undergraduate studies who died suddenly while at work on Feb. 28. After the UMBC Gospel Choir and Jubilee Singers performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and "Total Praise," speakers in turn shared their impressions of Toliver during an hour-long ceremony punctuated with tears and laughter. Memorial service Wednesday for assistant dean who died Feb. 28.
Ever since LaMont Toliver passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 28, the outpouring of emotion and remembrance in the UMBC community has been continuous. Toliver, the assistant dean for undergraduate education and director of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program became a mentor and friend to many during his 22 years at UMBC, according to a tribute page set up for people to express their thoughts about him and his legacy. Among the comments: I love Mr. Toliver because he was 'that guy' for the students. He had a way of reaching the students on such a personal level...I remember him asking us what integrity meant. Noon service in University Center ballroom for LaMont Toliver, assistant dean at UMBC who died Feb. 28.
The UMBC community is holding a memorial service for LaMont Toliver, the school's director of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program and assistant dean for undergraduate education, who died suddenly on Feb. 28. The service will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at noon in the ballroom of the University Center, and is expected to last about an hour. A viewing will be held with the Toliver family on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at March Funeral Home - West at 4300 Wabash Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215. The funeral home will also be open for viewing hours from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. A "Family Hour" and viewing will be held on Thursday, Mar. 8, from 10-11 a.m. at The People's Community Baptist Church at 31 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, 20905. Thank you for your coverage, ArbutusPatch. I missed the opportunity of being apart this sober, but joyful tribute to Mr. LaMont Toliver. As a member of the Meyerhoff Scholar Program, he was both a mentor and friend to me. I am sure his spirit and legacy will remain a constant fabric within the UMBC community.
