Winter Weather Advisory In Effect Early Monday

The advisory lasts from 5 a.m. until noon in much of Maryland.

Much of Maryland—from the D.C. metro area to the Baltimore suburbs—is under a winter weather advisory Monday morning. The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. until noon in Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard and Montgomery counties, as well as Baltimore City, the National Weather Service announced Sunday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s by midday, but morning commuters may encounter freezing rain mixed with sleet and possibly snow, according to the advisory. Only a trace of accumulation is expected. Winds from the south will gust to 10 to 15 mph, the advisory said. The precipitation "will cause travel difficulties," the advisory said. Drivers should use caution and "be prepared for slippery roads and limited" …

UPDATE: 1 Dead After Car Goes Airborne From I-95 To I-195

The crash happened Thursday morning in the Arbutus area.

UPDATED (3:12 p.m)—A Harford County man was killed Thursday morning when his car went airborne off Interstate 95 and landed on Interstate 195. According to a news release from Maryland State Police, the crash took place shortly afer 7 a.m., when a 2006 Ford Focus struck the left guardrail on northbound I-95. It went airborne, landing in the eastbound lane of I-195, striking a 2002 Chevy Suburban. The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and the incident remains under investigation. Kenneth L. Kirst 3rd, the driver of the Ford, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Kirst, 20, resided in the 200 block of Spry Island Road in Joppa. His family had not yet been notified...to include his mother and father....when you posted his name for all to see after the accident anouncing he died at the scene. AAA Mid-Atlantic Praises Drop in Traffic Deaths

AAA issues its “Best and Worst” list.

In its “Best and Worst” in transportation list for 2011, AAA Mid-Atlantic praised a 10 percent drop in traffic fatalities in Maryland. AAA noted that nationwide traffic fatalities are at their lowest level since 1949, according to data released earlier this month by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That includes a 10 percent decline in Maryland, from 549 deaths to 493 in 2010, the latest year for such figures. The key factors in the improvement, according to AAA, include a reduction in deaths in crashes involving drunk drivers and a decline in fatalities of drivers of passenger cars and light trucks, including SUVs, minivans and pickups.
