The operators of Maryland Live! said it will move fast to hire 1,000 new workers and install table games now that voters have approved expanded gambling.
Operators of the Maryland Live! Casino said they will move quickly to add live table games and expand its hours, now that voters have approved a referendum on expanded gambling in the state. The Cordish Cos. said it will be ready to go once the state issues the necessary regulations to govern table games and 24-hour operations. The company said it will be hiring for as many as 1,000 new positions. A bill authorizing gambling expansion in Maryland will likely be amended, according to the chairman of the House subcommittee that is holding hearings on the legislation. Del. Frank Turner, a Howard County Democrat, initially characterized possible changes to the bill passed Friday by the Senate as minor. Maryland Live! releases numbers from opening night.
Maryland's newest casino opened Wednesday with much fanfare and more guests than got in the door. More than 10,000 people entered Maryland Live! at Arundel Mills on opening night, according to casino representatives. There were 1,500 employees in attendance and thousands of visitors who weren't able to get in due to long lines, the Baltimore Sun reported. There are two other casinos in Maryland: Hollywood in Perryville with 1,500 slot machines, and the Casino at Ocean Downs, with 800 slot machines. Maryland Live! is the largest, with 3,200 machines in place now and 1,500 more coming by October.
