Catonsville Patch:  Where did you grow up and what brought you to Catonsville? Ellen Hemmerly:  Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but now I live in Patapsco Woods.  I am married and I have two sons.  I moved here 24 years ago with my husband at the time, who had a position at the Woodholme Center.  I was pregnant with my first child, and I did consulting and part-time work for a few years. UMBC Launches Program for Disabled Students

Non-degree program for people with intellectual disabilities strives for independent living in four-year college environment.

On the 22nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law, officials from University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the State of Maryland announced a novel non-credit program at UMBC to provide a four-year college experience to people with intellectual disabilities. The Students United in Campus Communty Engagements for Post-Secondary Success (SUCCESS) program was described by UMBC president Freeman Hrabowski as the first four-year program of its kind in the state. "We will provide young adults with intellectual disabilities a full four-year university experience," Hrabowski said on July 26 to a group in the University Center Ballroom. 'DREAMERS' Kick Off Tuition Law Fight at UMBC

Supporters say law gives students who are illegal immigrants "a level playing field."

Karina is a "Dreamer." She says she's not the only one. The 22-year-old illegal immigrant and Montgomery College student spoke Wednesday at a news conference at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County to kick off Educating Maryland Kids, an effort to pass the Maryland DREAM Act.
