A series of concerts in honor of the 30th anniversary will be held next week.
UMBC is going to help the Baltimore Dance Project celebrate its 30th anniversary next week. The school, located at 1000 Hilltop Circle in Catonsville, will host concerts of the Project on Feb. 7, 8 and 9, according to a press release. These will be the first dance performances on the stage of the school's new Proscenium Theatre in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, the release states. Artistic directors and choreographers Carol Hess and Doug Hamby will lead the way with principal dancer Sandra Lacy set to be featured. Hess is the UMBC Department of Dance chairman and associate professor. Hess serves as an associate professor of dance at UMBC while Lacy is a faculty member in that same department. According to a report, Rich Flemming was shot and killed in Philadelphia this past weekend.
Rich Flemming, who played one year of basketball at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was shot and killed on Sunday in Philadelphia. The 24-year-old Flemming was shot three times, at before 6 p.m. Sunday, according to a story in the story in the Fairfield (CT) Minuteman. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at the Temple University Medical Center. The story said that Philadelphia police had made an arrest, but the information on that wasn't available as of Wednesday morning. Flemming played for UMBC in the 2008-09 season after transferring from Fairfield. He averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 23 games as UMBC made it to the America East championship game where it lost to Binghamton in March 2009. UMBC dismissed …

Catonsville High School's second semester Back-To-School Night will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday. Those coming that night should go right to their student's first-period class and not the auditorium, as there's no meeting there, according to the school website. Bring your student's schedule to use during the event. Students received copies of their schedule last week. It's not a conference night, however, so if you want a conference with a teacher, contact the teacher via email. The school's web site has more information on the event.

The winter break is over for the local college students. CCBC-Catonsville and UMBC will start their spring semesters on Monday. At UMBC, residents are moving back to campus in the next few days to prepare for the start of the spring schedule. There are also changes to places such as at the the library and bookstore. Both will have extended hours in the spring. Check the school's website for more information with the bookstore and library. Check the CCBC website for more information on the spring semester. The spring semester will go through mid-May at both schools.

UMBC beats Stony Brook before a record crowd of 2,905 at the RAC Arena Wednesday afternoon.
On weeknights, UMBC usually plays at home. But one of its more popular basketball programs comes the starting times are shifted. The popularity showed again Wednesday when the Retrievers took on Stony Brook in a "Midday Madness" game where they brought in hundreds of local elementary and middle school students. They helped make up a record crowd of 2,905 at the RAC Arena and watched UMBC top the Sea Wolves, 70-59. The crowd was loud and raucous, and it certainly seemed to help the injury-plagued Retrievers, who needed some help after losing three straight, close games. This will be the 35th year for the summer camps.
UMBC's Summer Day Camp starts registration for this year's sessions. The school will be "celebrating 35 years of programming this summer," according to the press release sent Wednesday, and the camp began the January registration by co-sponsoring the school's women's basketball game against Stony Brook. The game is at noon Wednesday, and will be televised on ESPN3. Fans got UMBC Summer Day Camp frisbees at the game, which also featured special promotions for the large number of local elementary and middle school students. The deadlines for senior baby ads in the Catonsville High yearbook are approaching next Friday.
If you have a good baby picture, or pictures, of your Catonsville High senior, the school has an idea for you. It's offering senior baby ads in the upcoming 2012-13 yearbook. The deadline to submit your ad is Jan. 18, according to the school website. Ads are going to be in color in the yearbook. These ads may be bought by anyone and the staff or the buyer can design it, the site states. There are four sizes available: a full page, half-page (horizontal), quarter-page (vertical) and one-eighth of a page (horizontal). The site lists a variety of costs, as well as what you can do with the picture. Northrop Grumman gives the school $30,000 in various grants to help students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The Community College of Baltimore County announced that it received $30,000 in grants from Northrop Grumman Corporation and the Northrop Grumman Foundation. A statement on the school's website states these grants will be used to "enhance opportunities for students interested in pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math degrees with a focus on engineering." The community college is going to connect with Baltimore County Public Schools and the National Science Foundation to develop the Enhancing the STEM Engineering Pipeline initiative, it states. The winter sports season is underway at Catonsville High, and the school is looking for some student volunteers to help. Help is needed at the basketball and wrestling concessions. Caringi gets another award, as does Liam Paddock
UMBC's Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall/Calvert Hall) earned the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Offensive Player of the Year honors for soccer, the conference announced Thursday. The honors were from UMBC and ECAC, according to a news release. Caringi is the second UMBC player to win this award in the past four years. Levi Houapeu also won this honor three years ago, it states. This season, Caringi was named Striker of the Year in the America East. His 14 goals and 32 points led the conference, and Caringi stands 13th in both total goals and points, according to the release.
