It's in the middle of playoff season in basketball and wrestling for local high schools, but Catonsville's going to be in a different competition this weekend. The school's "It's Academic" match is going to be shown at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, on WJZ. In addition, Giant Food (the school's sponsor for this) is going to be featuring "Catonsville High School Fish Fillet Sandwiches" this weekend at their store in the Wilkens Beltway Plaza.

The National PTA has asked for snowflakes to post in the school's new building.
Local schools started undertaking a project to help support the children at Sandy Hook Elementary School after last week's shooting tragedy. Some schools in Catonsville have been making snowflakes for the Connecticut school as per the instructions of the National PTA. Catonsville Elementary, Westchester Elementary, Johnnycake Elementary and Catonsville High have all joined in the effort, according to a school administrator. The National PTA's website said that students from Sandy Hook Elementary, the scene of the shooting and massacre last week, won't be going back to that building when school starts again. The school's After Prom Party Committee is looking for student volunteers.
The winter sports season is underway at Catonsville High, and the school is looking for some student volunteers to help. Help is needed at the basketball and wrestling concessions. The school ranks first in Giant Bonus Bucks competition.
Catonsville High School is in first place among local schools in the recent standings in the Giant Bonus Bucks program. This is for schools in the Catonsville area, according to the high school's edline web site. As of Monday, Catonsville High was in first place with $1,256.25 in Bonus Bucks. That's a good lead over Catonsville Middle, which has totaled $922.03. Westowne Elementary is in third with $550.91. Hillcrest Elementary is fourth at $383.09. Class of 2014 will use it as a fundraiser.
Catonsville High is having a poinsettia sale to benefit the Class of 2014. The plants are $12 apiece, and can be purchased with checks being made payable to Auchey's Plant Farm. Money and the order forms will be due Dec. 5. They can be given to Ms. Maltese in Room 109 or placed in her mailbox in the main office. The pick up is 2:30-5 p.m. Dec. 12 in the cafeteria. Abel Deneke gets picked as page for upcoming General Assembly session.
Catonsville High senior Abel Deneke was recently selected as a page for the 2013 Maryland General Assembly session. He will be working with both the House and Senate on different tasks on a regular basis. An announcement on the school's edline web page said the selection was made on Nov. 5. High school seniors have had a chance to serve as pages at the General Assembly since 1970, when the program began. The General Assembly website said there are 105 pages and 36 alternates selected each year to represent their schools and regions.
