AVFD's annual Santa Detail will run through Dec. 23.

The Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department's Santa Detail is under way.  The department's website says, "Santa plans to visit our neighbors with his helpers sharing the good news and serving Candy Canes. There will be a lot of flashing lights and noise...and our new squad. Come out and enjoy the beautiful night." The annual tradition will run from 5:45-8:30 p.m. until Dec. 23. Specific dates and locations are listed on the fire department's web site. For more information, residents may contact info@arbutusvfd.org or call 410-242-6601. Ambulance Comes Full Circle for Local Charity

There was a bewildering number of switches and components that aren't usually found on a consumer vehicle, and some things appeared to no longer work. AVFD Receives New Rescue Vehicle

New heavy rescue truck will cost about $700,000 when fully equipped.

Members of Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department got a look at their new heavy rescue vehicle when it was brought to the firehouse on Sept. 21. The truck has a price tag of about $650,000, which will total about $750,000 when fully decked out with equipment and gear. The new vehicle replaces a 20-year-old truck that has neared the end of its useful life of service, according to AVFD President John McDowell. According to AVFD Chief Douglas Simpkins, the new vehicle features state-of-the-art safety equipment, including air bags and a rear-view video camera. The rescue squad vehicle will be put in service once it has been equipped and drivers have had an opportunity to get trained behind the wheel, Simpkins said.
