Family Shares Passion for Scouting

Jay Schaefer wants to bring Venturing program to Halethorpe.

  When Jay Schaefer and his son Jay Jr. of Halethorpe returned from the Philmont Scout Ranch in 2005, Jane Schaefer rekindled her interest in the scouts, based on what she heard from her father and brother. Once a Girl Scout, she had lost interest and moved on to other things, but she wanted the incredible experience they had. “It’s the ultimate camping experience in scouting,” said Jay Schaefer. Philmont Scout Ranch is a large, rugged, mountainous ranch located near the town of Cimarron, NM, covering approximately 137,500 acres of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Vehicles for Change Hitting the Road

The nonprofit organization agreed to vacate its current Relay location by May 15.

  Facing mounting opposition from the Relay community, the nonprofit organization Vehicles for Change said that it will vacate its present location on the 5200 block of Washington Blvd. and move to another site in Howard County by May 15. The nonprofit had requested approval for an outdoor used car sales area, which was denied by Baltimore County last year. In a Feb. 7 appeals hearing in Towson, an attorney for the organization said Vehicles for Change will leave Relay rather than risk enforcement action on code violation. "The little guys win one," Relay resident Andrew Plitt said after the hearing. I'm so sorry I just read this article- clearly the residents have no idea what this organization does, and clearly the RIA is ignoring the trashier businesses in the same area- what gives with the discrimination? Performers Bring Culture to Arbutus Senior Center

Social Security chorus, Korean dancers recently visit center.

Korean dancers from Greenmount Senior Center performed at Arbutus Senior Center on Jan. 25. About 51 seniors enjoyed a catered lunch from American Asian Restaurant on Francis Avenue before the performance. On Jan. 26. the Social Security Chorus performed at the senior center.

Violence Erupts at Private Event Held at Fire Hall

One arrest, two sent to Shock Trauma after Friday night party at Violetville VFD.

Separate fights broke out early Saturday at a private party held at the Violetville Volunteer Fire Department, resulting in one person being stabbed and another being hit by a car, police said. One person was arrested. At around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 4, a fight broke out in a large crowd of people attending a birthday party at the fire hall and one adult male was stabbed, officials said. The stabbing victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, according to fire department officials. Unrelated to the stabbing, another fight erupted shortly afterward that resulted in an adult male being struck by a car, according to police. Arbutus Middle School 8th Grade Basketball Plays Last Games

Final home games are against Golden Ring Middle School and General John Stricker Middle School.

The 8th grade basketball teams at Arbutus Middle School are playing their last two games of the season, both of them at home, according to coach Ben Fusco. The teams play against Golden Ring Middle School this afternoon, with girls playing at 4 p.m. and boys playing at 5 p.m. Adult admission is $3 and student admission is $2, with proceeds being donated to cancer charities.

Lansdowne Group Losing Leader

LIA president Brian Bailey accepts job in Arizona.

Lansdowne native and live-long resident Brian Bailey, elected president of Lansdowne Improvement Association last summer, announced on Jan. 19 that he accepted a job in Arizona and is leaving the area. "We'll really miss Brian," said LIA board member Christine Koloski, who has known Bailey since he was five years old while working as a teacher's assistant at Lansdowne Elementary School. "This is a very big opportunity for him," Koloski said. "He's a very kind and generous person, and I'm very proud of his accomplishments." Beginning March 1, Bailey will become executive director of the Phoenix-based Arizona Petroleum Marketers Association. Previously, Bailey worked in the government relations office of the American Urological Association. …
