UMBC Exhibit Shows Everyday Life of Avant Garde Artist

More than 65 black and white photos depict Andy Warhol and his studio visitors in the mid 1960s.

American pop artist Andy Warhol is known worldwide for his paintings, prints and avant-garde films, but a limited-time exhibit at UMBC's Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery is offering a rare glimpse into Warhol's life and studio days between 1965 and 1967. "The Velvet Years 1965-67: Warhol's Factory" exhibit includes more than 65 black and white photographs taken by Stephen Shore. The photos show Warhol and a diverse group of actors, artists, writers and musicians, including rock band the Velvet Underground, whose members frequented Warhol's Midtown Manhattan studio known as the "Factory." At the time of the photos, Warhol was emerging as a prominent visual artist, said Emily Hauver, interim curator of exhibitions at the Albin O. Kuhn Library …
