Volunteers Clean Up Herbert Run

More than 400 pounds of trash removed from Arbutus waterway.

A dozen volunteers rallied by Friends of Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway spent several hours on Oct. 1 removing trash and debris from a stretch of Herbert Run through Arbutus.

Attending to a section of Herbert Run near Southwestern Boulevard behind the parking lot, the group collected about 440 pounds of frash, including a beach umbrella, fluorescent light bulbs, baby diapers, a fire extinguisher, underwear and rainbow socks, many beer and liquor bottles, and numerous plastic bags hanging in trees and tangled in foliage.

Members of the Arbutus Improvement Association participated as well.

I'm glad to see "hobos" were not included in the list of things taken out of Herbert Run.

it's great that the patch recognized the good job of cleaning 400 lbs. of trash and debris from Herbert run by volunteers from in and around Arbutus, but where is any mention of the Riverview community clean up which filled 7 roll-off dumpsters on 9/10/11? the Patch knew about it, but wasn't interested in our effort.

Of course I'm interested in the Riverview cleanup, and I sought images from participants. I'm not able to attend every event and take photos, but I'm always interested in receiving photos from readers to post in a gallery or short news story. In this case, I found these images at the group's site and asked permission to reprint them. Ron, I will gladly post photos and stories from Riverview Community Association when you pass them along.

The Arbutus Improvement Association tries to notify Bruce of anything days & weeks ahead of time, sometimes even suppling our own photographs along w/ the ones he takes..
I don't think its fair to say he wasn't interested! I mean there is an article done by The "ARBUTUS" Patch just back in Dec. of Riverview Clean Up! I also read about Riverview clean up & viewed photographs just a few weeks ago about that 9/10 clean up. Honestly when I read that article I figured the only reason why the Arbutus Patch didn't write something on it was because another news source had already. Maybe having two different news reporters writing about the same community clean up may have been a slight over kill. Plus Riverview also received support from the Councilmen's Office where neither Arbutus Improvement Association or Patapsco Valley Heritage Greenway received such support. As a matter of fact neither organization received dumpsters, bags, gloves, or a County Truck to help haul away all the trash. Its a lot of area & different communities for one man and we all want his attention! ;) Ron ~ I wasn't aware of your community clean up until I read about it from a posting the Councilmen shared. Please let other Associations in the area know when you do your clean ups.... I know the A.I.A. will always try to lend a helping hand! Nikki Marlatt-Young / President Arbutus Improvement Association

I was happy there wasn't any "hobos" to be reported on the list! ;)

Hi, Ron! Let us know about your cleanup efforts and we would be happy to partner with you to help promote your efforts, advertise for additional volunteers and assist in any way we can to help with your clean up efforts along Herbert Run. We believe the damp and rainy weather scared a lot of our volunteers away, but usually have a lot more folks show up, especially if it is nice weather! Keep up the great work in preserving the Herbert Run watershed!
