Arbutus knows how to throw a parade the old-fashioned way: marching bands, fire trucks, majorettes twirling batons, the gyrating of scantily costumed women...

Some in the community contend that the costumes and routines of parade participants crossed a line from artistic licence to licentious.

"These marching bands are lewd and disrespectful," reader David Sohns. "I won't take my children to watch this again."

Jennifer Gower, president of the AVFD auxiliary, told Arbutus Patch that she spent most of the day "doing damage control."

Gower said that AVFD members are discussing ways to ensure that the parade remains family-friendly in the future.
