Cookie Needs Your Help

Illness of elderly owner left 10-year-old poodle abandoned and in need of care.

Lifelong Arbutus resident Darla Belli is asking for the public's assistance in helping Cookie, a 10-year-old poodle with a special need.

After many years of faithful companionship, Cookie's elderly owner is in the hospital with terminal illness. Belli picked up Cookie on Nov. 8 at the Montgomery County animal shelter.

Belli had recently become director of the animal rescue organization Tails of Hope, based in Mt. Airy.

Fortunately, Cookie found a new foster home. However, her previous owner neglected Cookie's veterinarian needs and has terrible tooth and gum disease. All of her teeth will likely have to be extracted.

"Cookie's teeth are the worst I've ever seen and brought a grimace to the face of the vet," Belli said. "Her plight is a sad one that will put a huge dent in small budget."

The expensive dental procedures will drain away funds that are available for other animals that need veterinarian care, she said.

Belli also reminds pet owners to make plans for their animals in the event of illness, disability or death.
