UMBC Athletics' Week in Review (10/29/-11/4)

A look back at the week that was and some upcoming events in UMBC Athletics.

The second-seeded UMBC men’s soccer team will host No. 3 and defending America East champion Stony Brook in the America East semifinals on Wed., Nov. 7 at Retriever Soccer Park. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m. Should the Retrievers advance past the Seawolves, they would take on either No. 1 seeded Vermont in Burlington or host No. 5 UNH at Retriever Soccer Park on Sat., Nov. 10.

The basketball teams open the 2012-13 schedules this weekend. The men open at Penn and the women are at Morgan on Fri., Nov. 9. Phil Stern’s team opens the home schedule vs. Monmouth on Sun., Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m, while Aki Thomas’ squad welcomes Eastern (Pa.) to the RAC Arena on Mon., Nov. 12.

If you can’t make it out to the RAC for any basketball action this season, www.umbcretrievers.tv has all the game, live and in HD ready for you!  Listen to Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier’s play-by-play description, see special features and catch the action from all sides of the RAC Arena throughout the 2012-13. A Retriever Believer All-Access Pass is only $69.95, or you can purchase single games for $6.95!

In volleyball, UMBC junior setter Mallory McIntyre  dished out a career-high 59 assists and scooped up 15 digs as the UMBC volleyball team defeated Albany for the first time since 2007, 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21), Friday evening at the RAC Arena. The win stops a 13-game losing streak to the Great Danes and marks the first victory for the Retrievers since a five-set win at home on Oct. 12, 2007.

“That was a really nice, hard fought win for our team,” said head coach Ian Blanchard. “I’m incredibly proud of our effort as a team and this shows that when we play as a complete squad we’re hard to beat.”

With her career night, McIntyre posted her fourth double-double of the year, second on the team behind only sophomore Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) who recorded her 11th of the season, Friday night with a match-high 18 kills to go along with ten digs.

The  team defeated Hartford on Senior Day, this time in three sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-18), Sunday afternoon at the RAC Arena. With the win, UMBC improves to 14-14 overall this season and 7-4 in America East play while Hartford falls to 8-18 this season and 2-8 in conference contests.

UMBC has one match left- at Stony Brook on Friday. A win by the Retrievers would clinch a spot in the following weekend’s four-team America East Tournament.
