State Playoffs: Kummerlowe's Walk-Off Blast Lifts Vikings Over Randallstown

Senior Brian Kummerlowe's leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie and propelled the Vikings over Randallstown and into the region semis.

After Lansdowne failed to hold a one-run lead in the top of the seventh inning of Monday afternoon’s region quarterfinal matchup against Randallstown, Vikings catcher Brian Kummerlowe apparently did want to make the home fans stay for extra innings.

With the score tied at six, Kummerlowe led off the bottom of the frame by drilling a home run over the fence in left center field, earning his team a 7-6 win and a 2A North semifinal matchup with Dundalk on Wednesday.

The senior’s blast erased what could have been a troubling loss had the Vikings not hung on. Lansdowne committed several errors that led to a majority of Randallstown’s runs.

However, Ryan Miller battled into the sixth inning and Sam Warfield in relief stranded the potential go-ahead run on third base with just one away in the top of the seventh inning—after Randallstown had just tied up the game.

Lansdowne gained the lead early on with a four-run first inning punctuated by RBI base hits from Alex Kurth and Mike Morris. However, the Rams responded right away with three in the top of the second to keep the game close throughout.

RBI’s from Shane Montgomery and J.T. Tucker in the bottom of the second gave the Vikings a bit of breathing room, before two walks and an error helped Randallstown pull within one in the top of the sixth.

With a win on Wednesday, Lansdowne would face the winner of Digital Harbor-Eastern Tech for the region championship and a spot in the final four of Class 2A.
