UMBC Returning to Normal

Power restored to most of campus after week-long crisis.

UMBC has nearly recovered from a week-long power crisis, with electricity restored to most of the campus by Thursday night.

The university was officially open Wednesday morning, although about 200 students who were living on campus at the time of last week's electrical transformer explosion remain housed in off-campus accommodations.

Sources tell Arbutus Patch that students may return to UMBC residences on Friday.

On Thursday night, electricity had been restored to most UMBC buildings, including the nine residence halls and apartments.

Electrical contractors remain working on the south side of the campus, where streetlights are out along Hilltop Circle from the I-195 ramp to Poplar Avenue. The remaining area of power outage appears to affect a limited area of the campus near the athletic field.
