UMBC Named 'Great College to Work For'

A just-released survey confirms what many of the 1,952 faculty and staff at already know. 

For the third year in a row, UMBC was named one of America's "Great Colleges to Work For" in an annual survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

UMBC made the survey's "Honor Roll" for ranking highly in seven of 12 areas surveyed by the publication.

The survey results were released by the Chronicle on Aug. 6.

"It shows that some of the things we're focusing on are working," said Valerie Thomas, UMBC's vice president for human resources.

For this year's ranking, the Chronicle surveyed almost 47,000 faculty and staff at 294 colleges and universities, according to the paper.

Questions in the survey sought information in 12 categories: collaborative governance, compensation and benefits, confidence in senior leadership, diversity, facilities and workplace security, job satisfaction, professional/career development programs, respect and appreciation, supervisor or department chair relationships, teaching environment, tenure clarity and process, and work/life balance.

This is the second consecutive year that UMBC was listed among the survey's Honor Roll.

Howard Community College also made the Honor Roll in the medium-sized two-year college category.

Anne Arundel Community College was included among the Honor Roll awards in 2011, but fell short this year.
