Dr. Charles Brown, director of athletics, physical education and recreation at UMBC, plans to retire June 30 and move to a different position at the school.
When Brown steps down, that is going to finish a 24-year run tenure where UMBC has grown across the board into a stronger Division I program. The school was just getting started in that area when Brown took over.
Brown has helped put together a strong program of Division athletics at UMBC, according to a press release from the school on Tuesday.
During his tenure, the school has won 46 conference championships and had 29 appearances in NCAA Championship competition in the last 15 years.
In addition, UMBC has maintained strong marks on the academic side of things with high graduation rates for its student-athletes.
After stepping down from this job, Brown will move over to the UMBC Division of Professional Studies, helping people find opportunities in the sports management field.
