Superintendent Dallas Dance has recommended that the last day of school for students in Baltimore County Public Schools be June 16, according to a statement from the school system.

Public schools in the county were closed for nine regularly scheduled school days due to inclement weather over the winter; the school system annually sets aside seven days for such purposes, the statement said.

To make up for the time lost, the school system used Monday, March 31, as a regular school day—previously, it was a scheduled day off for students and a professional development day for teachers—and the last day of school was to be June 17, according to the statement.

At Tuesday's Baltimore County Board of Education meeting, Dance reported that the Maryland State Department of Education granted Baltimore County Public Schools a waiver for four days lost to inclement winter weather, which would move the school system’s final school day for students to June 16.

“We are appreciative for the approval of these four days from State Superintendent Lillian Lowery and for the state’s flexibility during what has been an unusually difficult winter for schools,” Dance said. “It is important to make up as much of the lost time as we can, and Dr. Lowery and the state have been great partners in ensuring that we can do that.”

The Baltimore County Board of Education is expected to finalize the decision about the last day of school with a vote at its May 6 meeting, when it was also determine whether to make that a full day or half day of school.

Yeah, attendance will be very high on that day, you bet.

The last day of school is a Monday? That makes no sense. I bet it will set a record for absenteeism.

Nah, the record for low attendance was likely set when we had school on Memorial Day in 1996.
