Lansdowne HS Basketball Routs Overlea

Seniors Laguerre, Schene power Lansdowne in defeat of Overlea

In the last home game of their careers, the nine Lansdowne Vikings’ seniors pulled together in a rout of visiting Overlea High in the first round of the Maryland State Boys Basketball playoffs. Leading the eighth-seeded Vikings in the 69-45 victory was senior Nick Laguerre with 17 points. The team’s leading scorer all season, Laguerre started slowly, as did the rest of the Lansdowne squad, before breaking out in the third quarter with an array of creative finishes in transition.

“We started slowly, maybe there were a little jitters for the playoffs, something I didn’t expect out of a team with nine seniors,” Lansdowne coach Greg Karpers said. “But we got it together after halftime and really turned it on to pull away.”

Karpers credited Greg Schene, who transferred to Lansdowne for his senior year after the closure of Cardinal Gibbons. Coming off the bench, Schene hit his first 3-point attempt from deep on the wing. He followed with two more 3-point baskets in and a tough finish and a foul on a quick pass from fellow senior Kenny Johns in transition.
