Hillcrest ES Wins Division of County's Black Saga Competition

Hillcrest Elementary School won the event held last weekend and will go on to the state finals.

Hillcrest Elementary School won the elementary school division of the 2013 Baltimore County Public Schools' Black Saga Competition, held last Saturday at Randallstown High.

This event has students answering over 800 questions about the African-American experience. It starts in the fall each year when students begin to compete against teams from their own schools and counties before eventually moving to the state finals.

That's where Hillcrest will be going now.

Hillcrest also won the elementary school division last year. In this year's event, Hillcrest's Team 1 is the team that captured the title.

West Towson's Team 1 took second place while West Towson's Team 2 was third.

Sudbrook Team 1 won in the middle school division.

The Maryland State Black Saga competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at Towson University's Union and Burdick Hall.

Mr. Hammond, these are good questions and your point is taken, but you do realize that simply asking them gets you labeled as a racist by the ‘open minded’. I would label you as ‘more open minded’ though.

Perhaps I am biased because I had a child who participated. However, it seems to me when there is an article commending the achievement of six 10-11 year old elementary school students in our town who spent several months of their own free time studying to compete in an extracurricular academic competition in a county competition, the appropriate comment is "Congratulations on your hard work, you all did a great job representing Hillcrest and we are proud of all of you!"

Let's celebrate some super kids!! The students who participated worked hard in their free time to do something positive! So let's be good role models and be positive in return! Congrats to our super Hillcrest teams! You kids rock!
