CCBC Rededicates Soccer Field

The community college's soccer field named for Mildred and Joseph Murray.

Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville rededicated its soccer field, which had been named in honor of Joseph Murray, to include his wife, Mildred.

The field had been dedicated in 1974 to honor Joseph Murray, who CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis described as one of the original 1958 employees who helped shaped the direction of what was then called Catonsville Community College.

Mildred Murray is a long-time supporter of CCBC and a pioneer in women's athletics, according to Kurtinitis.

For 43 years Mildred Murray served in a variety of managerial athletic capacities, eventually retiring as the coordinator of Physical Education and Interscholastic for Boys and Girls for Baltimore County. It was through her accomplishments that Baltimore County was at the forefront of implementing Title IX mandates, according to a statement released by the college.

Mildred Murray continued to support CCBC after her husband's death, according to the college. She partnered with Catonsville Community College and held the first state championships in basketball, volleyball and field hockey which lasted for approximately 17 years.

At a ceremony on Sept. 27, the soccer field was renamed the Joseph and Mildred Murray Soccer Stadium.

"This is a real honor for me, and it was an honor for Joseph," Mildred Murray said at the ceremony. "He always felt connected to Catonsville."

We all take the dramatic change in possibility for women for granted. Which is as it should be. But people like Mildred Murray and institutions like Catonsville Community College treated women as equals a decade before Title IX--a moving and courageous demonstration of leadership.
