The Road Scholar: Frederick Road Beltway Ramp Closing for Month

The temporary closure of the outer loop ramp is needed to build transitions, curbs and sidewalks.

The Maryland State Highway Administration announced the temporary closure of the ramp from the outer loop of the I-695 beltway to Frederick Road for a one-month period.

The closure will begin at 9 p.m on Sunday, Sept. 9, according to the SHA.

The ramp closure is part of SHA’s $16.5 million project to replace the Frederick Road bridge over the beltway.

During the closure, work crews will rebuild the end of the ramp connection to Frederick Road, construct the transition from the new bridge to the roadway, and build new curbs, gutters and sidewalks along the future westbound lanes of Frederick Road, according to the SHA.

While the ramp is closed, traffic headed westbound on Frederick Road will be detoured to the Wilkens Avenue exit (Exit 12), turn right onto Wilkens Avenue East, turn left onto Kenwood Avenue at the temporary traffic signal, and turn onto the beltway back to Frederick Road (Exit 13) East and West, according to the SHA.
