Southwestern Boulevard Traffic Light Going Live

Switch to make traffic signal operational scheduled for Friday.

The new traffic signal at Southwestern Boulevard and Linden Avenue is scheduled to go live this week, Del. James Malone mentioned at the Sept. 30 crime summit sponsored by Arbutus Improvement Association.

The signal, which will be coordinated with the light at East Drive and Linden Avenue, is intended to ease the flow of traffic through Arbutus by commuters going from the MARC Halethorpe Station to the inner loop of northbound I-695 beltway.

Work on a new ramp leading from Southwestern Boulevard to the inner loop is expect to begin in 2014 and be completed by 2015, according to State Highway Administration officials.

A ribbon-cutting for the new traffic signal is expected to be held on Friday, Oct. 5, Malone said.

Once the light is turned on, it will flash yellow continuously for 72 hours, according to Malone.

On Monday, Oct. 8, the traffic signal will be operational from 3-7 p.m. for the evening commuter rush hour, Malone said. The rest of the time, the signal will flash yellow.

At some point in the future, the traffic signal will be operational 24 hours a day, according to Malone.
