Probation and Parole Discussed at WPCRO Meeting

A summary of Feb. 14 Wilkens Police Community Relations Organization meeting.

Brian Bailey resigned his position as WPCRO treasurer because he is moving to Arizona. WPCRO president Lorna Rudnikas reported that the board voted for at-large member Sandra Cullen to serve the remainder of Bailey's term.

Precinct 1/Wilkens commander Capt. John Spiroff reported on the results of an in Riverview and Baltimore Highlands. "Our first statistics look very good" according to preliminary data, Spiroff said.

Capt. Spiroff also discussed a police detail around the that has become a crime issue. The police are working with councilman Tom Quirk's office to have county crews remove debris and overgrown foliage around the bridge that contributes to the crime problem, he said.

Guest speaker John Dorsey, senior probation and parole agent with the state Division of Probation and Parole, discussed issues related to probation, parole and mandatory release. About 70,000 people are on probation or parole in Baltimore.

Precinct 1/Wilkens liaison officer Tom Wareheim said that police are still seeing a problem with people leaving car doors unlocked and allowing thefts from cars. Wareheim also said that the precinct has seen an increase in calls from residents reporting suspicious activity. "We'd like to see that trend continue," he said. "If it looks out of place, call us."

The meeting ended with cake and singing "Happy Birthday" for Capt. Spiroff's father, Robert Spiroff, who attended the meeting on his 92nd birthday.
