One Arrested for Bank Robbery

Baltimore County police have arrested one man in connection with the , on the 5400-block of Carville Avenue in Arbutus.

Clarence William Shipley, 23, of the 1200-block of Slater Road in Cherry Hill, was charged with robbery and held on $500,000 bail.

According to police, three men wearing green hoodies entered Chesapeake Bank at around 11:07 a.m. on Aug. 5. While one man stood by the door, an accomplice handed a note to a teller demanding money, police said.

The third man also had a demand note, but dropped it on the floor and never gave it to the teller, according to police. No weapons were displayed during the robbery, police said.

Witnesses said that the men took bundles of money and stuffed them into a green grocery bag, then fled out the bank door and up an adjacent alley.

The men were observed by several bystanders, who saw them enter a silver Honda sedan and leave the scene, according to police. One witness noted the license plate of the car. Some money from the robbery was dropped in the alley and recovered by police.

Twelve minutes after the robbery, the silver car with the tags matching the witness' description pulled into a housing complex on the 2900-block of Lakebrook Circle in Baltimore Highlands.

A Baltimore County Sheriff deputy saw the silver car in the parking lot of the complex, and police put the car under surveillance.

Shortly after 1 p.m., another vehicle pulled into the parking lot. A passenger exited the vehicle and entered the silver Honda. Both cars attempted to leave the housing development, but were stopped at the front gate by police.

According to police, the silver Honda had been borrowed from a woman who was unaware of the bank robbery.

After being taken into custody, money from the robbery was found in Shipley's pockets, police said. A witness described Shipley wearing clothing that matched surveillance images from the bank, according to police.

The robbery is still under investigation. County police continue to look for other suspects in the robbery, according to spokesperson Elise Armacost.
