Man Shot, Killed by Police After Patrol Car Stolen

Police have not identified a suspect in an incident that began in Catonsville.

Police have not identified a man shot and killed by officers during a bizarre early morning incident involving pursuits and a stolen police car.

According to police, at around 2 a.m. an officer from Precinct 1/Wilkens attempted to pull over a white Nissan driving without headlights near Harlem Lane and Edmondson Avenue in Catonsville.

The driver did not stop for police, and the officer decided not to engage in a pursuit. Rather than put the community at risk, county police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said, other officers were notified in an attempt to locate the vehicle.

About 10 minutes later, an officer from another precinct saw the Nissan southbound on the outer loop of the Beltway and attempted to pull the driver over, according to police. The driver refused to stop, and police did not pursue the vehicle, officials said.

As the police officer continued on the Beltway, the Nissan was found crashed at the I-95/I-695 split, according to police.

According to police, the suspect began fighting with the officer and said he had a gun and would shoot the officer. The Baltimore Sun reported that it was subsequently determined that the suspect did not have a gun.

The suspect ultimately stole the officer's police car and fled, according to police. Details of how the car was stolen remain under investigation.

The police car was tracked to Motel 6 on the 1400-block of Bloomfield Avenue, near Caton Avenue in Violetville, officials said.

As officers responded to Motel 6, a dark-colored Ford Bronco fled the parking lot at a high rate of speed, according to police.

Police stopped the Bronco, and as they were in the process of removing three passengers, a fourth passenger jumped behind the driver's wheel and fled in the Bronco, officials said.

The Bronco was stopped on the 3400-block of Annapolis Road when it collided with a police car, according to Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department.

Four police officers--three from Baltimore County and one from Anne Arundel County--discharged their weapons and fired several shots at the suspect, according to officials.

The suspect was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he died of his injuries.

Police officials said that the exact timeline and circumstances of the shooting are under investigation, and were unable to explain whether the suspect had a weapon or threatened officers with his vehicle.

The three Baltimore County officers involved in the shooting are from the Franklin, Woodlawn and Wilkens precincts, according to officials. None of the three has been previously involved in a police-involved shooting, officials said. All three have been placed on routine administrative leave.

The three passengers in the Bronco were questioned by police and released, according to Gugliemi.

"At this point, no charges have been filed," he said.

The suspect has not been positively identified, police said.
