UPDATED: Man Jumps Off Southbound I-95 Bridge

Man jumped from interstate at around 12:30 p.m., according to MD State Police.

8:20 p.m. update: Officials have not released the identity of the man who jumped off the southbound I-95 bridge into Patapsco Valley State Park.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., a ranger at the park's South Street entrance in Halethorpe said that "an accident" had occurred and that the South Street entrance would be closed for the next several hours.

The apparent suicide is the latest tragedy to take place in the park.

In July of last year, a 46-year-old Elkridge woman died at the Avalon area of the park after taking an indeterminate number of pills. The body of a Catonsville man who died from natural causes was found in the park in June of 2011 during a search for Phylicia Barnes. In October of last year, two people reportedly committed suicide by overdosing at the park.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police have not returned a call seeking information.

1:29 p.m. story: A man jumped off a bridge of southbound I-95 into Patapsco Valley State Park at around 12:30 p.m. this afternoon, according to Maryland State Police.

The incident occurred at the Baltimore County-Howard County line, police said.

Details about the incident are still emerging. Police would not confirm whether the victim survived or died.

Check back with Patch as this story develops.

Was there anymore to this story? Was this person from the area?
Bruce Goldfarb (Editor) September 24, 2012 at 10:57 PM
I do have some information that has been passed along, but before I report the person's name and other details, I need confirmation from somebody in an official capacity. I've called Department of Natural Resources three times without results yet. I'll keep trying.

Have some compassion or keep your low life mouth shut. What if this was one of your own family members. There are family members grieving over this awful loss of life right now and your lack of respect is disgraceful.

Hi Burd, can you please tell me the name of the person? I have a feeling it's my co-worker because he passed away at the same time :(
Bruce Goldfarb (Editor) September 25, 2012 at 03:26 PM
Please don't post a name here. This is a serious matter. We're talking about real people, with family and friends. At least three different names have been passed along to me so far. I have received several requests from readers for the person's identity, and I am pressing very hard to get confirmation from an official source.

@ Debbie, I have been both depressed and suicidal. I have lost people I cared for to suicide. Any little way one can" trick" the body into not killing themselves is good. I have even found answers to some of my problems by" dreams" so naps do work. Humans are wired to" fight or flee". If they are on something or stressed so they can't sleep it affects their thinking. Trying to calm down and look at the situation again if they can is a good thing
obesa September 25, 2012 at 04:25 PM
Why do some of you care about the identity of the individual? And why does the circumstance of his/her death matter to you? If you were a close family/friend, you'd have been notified; if you don't know by now, then it's none of your business. Besides, what good does it do to you or his loved ones for you to know his/her identity? Toss your curiosity aside, and respect the privacy of the deceased's loved ones.
number9dream September 25, 2012 at 04:29 PM
Why do you care that they care? What does it matter to you?
number9dream September 25, 2012 at 04:34 PM
Likewise, maybe it's personal to them.
obesa September 25, 2012 at 04:35 PM
Why do you care that I care that they care? What does it matter to you? And to answer your question: Maybe because it's personal to me. Think before you speak. There's no need for this information to be public but the family can surely use some privacy.
number9dream September 25, 2012 at 04:39 PM
Yes. You're right.

My condolences to all familiar with this individuals. Prayers for you all!
Climber422 September 25, 2012 at 09:18 PM
I would like to know the name of the man if anyone can tellme. I was one of the two Park Service employees who arrived at the scene before the police arrived. I cannot get the image out of my head and would like to know who he was and why he did this. Just for personal reasons. I open the park every morning and have to drive by the spot countless times a day. Any info to help be reslove my thoughts would be deeply appreciated for my minds sake.
Needaname September 25, 2012 at 11:04 PM
I can not imagine some one in your office does not have this man's name or a contact person so you can find this info out. I really can not imagine what comfort you may obtain by knowing this individuals name.

Hi Everyone - Bruce - You allude to details specific to this incident. As I do know the person everyone is collectively discussing I would appreciate anything you can share to me personally via private response that may help the family involved understand this situation more given details are sparse. Thank you
Bruce Goldfarb (Editor) September 26, 2012 at 01:00 AM
There has been a lot of speculation about this incident, and several people have told me the name of the person they believe was involved. The Department of Natural Resources has not responded to four requests for information. Ordinarily, Patch does not report the names of suicides. We realize this is a tragic and very personal experience. However, this incident happened in a public place and affected traffic. Also, identifying the person would also set the record straight for others who have passed along another name. It is just as important to let people know who was *not* the person.

Please contact me directly at bruce.goldfarb@patch.com or call me at 410-404-9380 and I can refer you to somebody who can help you through this. You can contact me in complete confidence. I won't share any information or anything you say with anybody else. Please contact me so we can talk.

Normally. suicides don't make it to the media for lots of reasons not the least of which is that the authorities so not want the site and circumstances of the event to become a "suicide magnet". i.e. a situation where someone who is thinking of committing suicide says to themselves "hey, that person was successful ending their life, maybe I should go there and do the same." Anyone who was close to this person already knows the identity of the deceased. Sharing a name does no one any good. My sincerest condolences to the friends and family of this person. May he rest in peace and may God care for his family.
obesa September 26, 2012 at 01:44 PM
@Bruce Goldfarb: Your latest comment does not make any sense. What does the fact that "this incident happened in a public place and affected traffic" have anything to do with publishing the name of the deceased? So what it happened in a public place and affected traffic? How does publishing the identity of the deceased change anything or make any difference in the future? As to your comment, "Also, identifying the person would also set the record straight for others who have passed along another name. It is just as important to let people know who was *not* the person" - as Harry Callahan pointed out, anyone who was close to the deceased already knows his/her identity. I don't think what you're pursuing after has anything to do with responsible journalism.
Why? September 26, 2012 at 08:47 PM
I know the person who died as well. I posted a comment last night similar to obesa's, but it did not post. I, too, can not understand why people want to know the person's identity. What will you gain? It would accomplish nothing but satifying the morbid curiousity of others who do not know him. There is no compelling reason to publish his identity. If you are a family or friend of him then you know who it is. Bruce - the fact that it "affected traffic" is a ridiculous argument and sad indication of your ability to justifying intruding on a family's privacy. Did your website publish the names of the two indiviiduals referenced in your article who committed suicide in the park? If not, then the argument that it was a public place is moot. A family is in pain. Hopefully, you never have to endure this type of pain.
Nancy Eason September 26, 2012 at 09:18 PM
Dear Climber 422, Just wanted you to know that I am concerned that you had to experience the trauma that you did on your job last week. I know that there are many responders to accidents and/or medical emergencies who would understand your discomfort. I hope that since you wrote to The Patch that you're already on your way to healing and able to find ways to deal with this unique type of grief.

"Michelle Obama is speaking at Morgan state tonight" Maybe that's why he jumped!
Joe September 26, 2012 at 10:10 PM
I would say that many who are from the same area of town and about the same age etc, may think they knew him at sometime in their lives? Curiosity at least?
JustinPolaco September 26, 2012 at 10:33 PM
Hi Everyone - WHY? - Could you please email me? YouthGoneOld@gmail.com Bruce - I am hopeful I will hear from you as well. I am simply looking for any details surrounding what took place. Details for the family are sparse. Thank you all so much

I know the person quite well too. I was actually in contact with others about him the actual day this tragic event occurred. I think it is best to keep that information anonymous as a show of respect to the family. I can tell you that he was a fantastic guy, funloving personality, extremely bright, with a decent career and a great family. This entire situation came as a complete shock to me and many others that know him. Let's allow him to rest in peace without passing his name around like a bunch of gossiping teens.
Jenn Jenn October 11, 2012 at 02:15 PM
Amen I totally agree ! I too knew him as well and the media needs to respect him and his family ! Prayers sent for peace and healing to his family an friends!
