Investigation Reveals Shot Officer's Weapon Fired

An off-duty police officer was shot in an Overlea area neighborhood in the early morning Dec. 9.

An off duty police officer who was shot in Overlea nearly two weeks ago was able to fire at least two rounds during the attack.

A police department investigation found that two rounds were fired from weapon of the Baltimore County police officer shot when a gunman emerged from an unruly crowd near Dale Avenue and Danville Road on Dec. 9, according to an email from police spokeswoman Elise Armacost.

"Investigators have not yet determined the context in which the weapon was fired," Armacost wrote, adding that police were able to confirm the officer had not been shot with his own weapon.

The incident occurred around 3:24 a.m. Dec. 9 when the officer, off-duty at the time, was driving to his home. As he neared the intersection of Dale Avenue and Danville Road he encoutered a large group of people standing in the road, according to a police report.

The officer stopped his vehicle and asked the crowd to move so he could pass, the report states. A gunman then emerged from the crowd and fired several shots, striking the officer twice.

The identity of the officer, who received non-life-threatening injuries, is not being released due to safety concerns, Armacost wrote. The suspect in the shooting remains at large.

What was this group of people doing standing in the road at 3:24 in the morning? It wasn't a warm night.

Interesting development. Apparently not a very good shot, though.
