Dog Shot At During Arbutus Home Invasion

Armed suspects broke into a house and shoot at a dog on 5500 block of Council Street.

Two armed men reportedly broke into an Arbutus home and shot at a dog after threatening a female resident.

Police said that at around 10:35 a.m. on Sept. 11, two masked suspects pried open the rear basement door of a home at the 5500 block of Council St. in Arbutus and approached the 52-year-old woman in the living room area.

One man pointed a black handgun at the resident and told her to get on the floor, according to police.

The armed man fired one shot at the woman's barking dog, then left the home through the basement door and fled the scene, police said.

The men were described as wearing ski masks and all black clothing, police said. They drove away in a blue or green Jeep Cherokee.

Omg!!! That's right around the corner from me! And I hadn't heard about this at all. Arbutus is really for some reason, starting to get scary. I won't even go for my walks anymore once it is dark. And when I am in my home even during the day, the doors stay locked. We all need to keep a good eye on our community and stick together to try and stop this senseless crime threat in Arbutus. I used to feel so safe here up until a few years ago. And, I feel it's a lot of different reasons we are seeing this kind of thing happening more often and closer to home. It's sad really.

So a home was broken into by masked men in black, the woman told to lie down, they shot at the barking dog and left? Was she robbed or hurt? I don't understand - are there things missing from this random (not isolated) crime report?

The resident was not robbed or hurt. That is all the information that the police have released about the incident.

This is sure to attract nice young families to the area.

What happened to her dog? Did he/she live, I hope so. This situation sounds like the two men entered the wrong house or it's a personal matter and done to scare her.....strange.....

Yes. Many questions remain here. The editor reported all the information provided to him by the police, yet inquiring minds want to know more. Police reports and newspapers are unable to answer them for you. This is a case in point showing that a community web-based close-knit forum like Facebook could be useful, where neighbors in the know could provide more information to each other, without jeopordizing an investigation. Whether it's an inside job or a random act of violence this is the crap that destroys neighborhoods, and of course all in the immediate area wants to know if they could be the next random victim. They don't want to wait for a generic report to be released at the end of the month.

Dog had minor surgery/stitches. The bullet grazed his neck. The word around here is that her two sons may know who the masked men were. It was not a random act. People are saying the masked men THOUGHT the house contained drugs. Cops supposedly didn't find anything when they searched the house.

In reference to my above comment: Anonymous' comment brings at least some ease to the situation. Though this type of incident is never good for a neighborhood it's residents can feel relatively sure that they will not be a random victim now. Anonymous' comment is mature, informative and doesn't jeopardize the investigation. It doesn't seem to be placed here to just start a rumor either. Seems to be knowledgable on the incident. Good info.
