Motorcyclist Hospitalized After Route 1 Crash

A 40-year-old Halethorpe man is in serious but stable condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center following a .

According to police, at around 12:08 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, Douglas Roy Niederberger, 22, of the 100 block of Recovery Drive in Centerville, Md., was driving a 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT northbound in the right-hand lane of Washington Boulevard.

Near the intersection with South Street in Relay, Niederberger's vehicle struck the east curb of Washington Boulevard, drove off the road edge and hit a guard rail, then spun back into the street and struck a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Robert Charles Fritz of the 4300 block of Spencer Street, police said.

Both Niederberger and Fritz were transported to Shock Trauma, according to police, with Fritz sustaining potentially life-threatening injuries.

Niederberger was sent home later Saturday. Fritz remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according to Shock Trauma spokesperson Cindy Rivers.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed to date, according to police.
