Arbutus Man Suspect in Russian Woman's Death

Suspect serving 10 years in federal prison for armed robbery.

The death of Yulia Pogrebenko, a Russian woman reported missing after she arrived in the United States to visit her son in Arbutus, was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

According to police, Pogrebenko arrived in the United States at the JFK Airport on Feb. 23. She rented a car and drove to Arbutus to visit her son, Dmitry Yuryevich Pronin, who was living on the 1000-block of Maiden Choice Lane.

Pogrebenko reportedly called a family member and said she was about an hour away from Baltimore. She hasn't been heard from or seen since.

On June 19, a boater discovered human remains in the Chesapeake Bay, south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Anne Arundel County. A DNA analysis confirmed the remains as those of Pegrebenko, according to police.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Pronin is serving a 10-year sentence for a March 5 armed robbery at a Delaware shopping center. Pronin pleaded guilty to armed robbery and weapons charges in June.

According to the Sun, Pronin was driving Pogrebenko's car at the time of the robbery, and had her passport and credit cards in his apartment, although he reportedly denied seeing his mother.

Police sources said that Pronin is suspected in his mother's death, but has not yet been charged, the Sun reported.
