Saint Agnes Hospital’s Chapel Being Renovated and Renamed in Honor of Cardinal Keeler

Baltimore, Md. – Saint Agnes Hospital recently announced that as part of its campus expansion plan, the Saint Agnes Chapel is being renovated and renamed after Cardinal William H. Keeler, honorary chairman of the hospital’s Beacon of Hope capital campaign and retired Archbishop of Baltimore. The chapel officially closed on Monday, October 14 and will reopen on Thursday, December 5 with the new name and revitalized interior just in time for the hospital’s annual Healing Hands Society induction event.

The chapel’s new name, “The Cardinal Keeler Chapel”, honors Cardinal Keeler’s dedication to Catholic healthcare, interfaith collaboration and the success of Saint Agnes. As the honorary campaign chair for the hospital’s Beacon of Hope capital campaign since 2006, Cardinal Keeler has helped raise more than $21 million toward the $25 million campaign to transform, renovate and improve the hospital.

“Cardinal Keeler has been a leader for many years in the Catholic church and the community. He’s also been a great friend to our organization — so this seemed like a perfect way for us to honor his service and spiritual guidance,” stated Lindy Small, president of the Saint Agnes Foundation.

The chapel is a key part of Saint Agnes’ dedication to providing spiritually-centered healthcare. The hospital’s spiritual care department encourages patients and their families to use the chapel for reflection, prayer and attending Mass during their time at the hospital.

The updates being made to the chapel will enhance the comforting architecture and European design elements of the existing structure and give patients and staff a renewed reason to utilize the chapel. Renovations will include a major paint refresh, updated flooring and lighting and reupholstered kneelers and pews.

“As Saint Agnes continues to evolve and better serve the community, we will always maintain our commitment to caring for not only the mind and body, but the spirit as well,” said Anne Buening, vice president of mission integration at Saint Agnes Hospital. “We’re excited to open the chapel back up in December and continue to provide for the spiritual well-being of our patients, families and staff members.”
