Board of Ed Approves Imagine Discovery Charter Agreement

The struggling Woodlawn school received a two year charter extension in August, which is up for renewal in fall 2013.

The Baltimore County Board of Education plans to keep a watchful eye on a struggling Woodlawn charter school.

At a Wednesday night meeting, the board approved an agreement that must be adhered to for Imagine Discovery Public Charter School to keep its two year charter extension and be eligible for renewal in fall 2013.

Imagine Discovery received the go-ahead to operate for another two years in late August after the board received pleas from parents of students at the school. Superintendent S. Dallas Dance said at the time that he wasn't happy with the school performance, but hoped the two year extension would give Imagine Discovery time to improve.

According to the charter agreement, the school will undergo a soft internal evaluation no later than Jan. 15, 2013 and an end of the year evaluation conducted by a third party agreed upon by both Imagine Discovery and the board. The evaluations will include reviews of suspension data, five years of the Imagine's academic performance, attendance records and parent surveys.

The current charter extension runs until the end of the 2013-2014 school year. In fall 2013, the board will vote on a two or four year extension of the charter to begin in the 2014-2015 school year.
