The Manigo Fire: The Community Responds

Vigil held Monday evening, memorial services scheduled for Thursday.

Hundreds turned out at the athletic field Monday night for a for 11-year-old Tyquis Moore and 7-year-old Jaquis Manigo, who perished along with their mother, Michelle Manigo, 32, in a .

Tyquis and Jaquis, along with their surviving brother Marquis--who was not home the night of the fire--play football with the Arbutus Golden Eagles, a club with a long and rich heritage as one of the oldest youth football teams in the country.

As reported in the Arbutus Times, the crowd yelled "Once an eagle, always an eagle" after a cluster of red and yellow balloons were released into the night sky.

A viewing is scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Calvin B. Scruggs Funeral Home at 1412 East Preston Street in Baltimore. Services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the Philadelphia Christian Church, 3401 Mannasota Avenue in Baltimore. Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery at 3900 Hollins Ferry Road in Lansdowne.

Aside from the candlelight vigil, the community has responded in a variety of ways. On Saturday, two days after the fire, Marquis played with the Arbutus Golden Eagles against the Linganore Landers in New Market, Md. According to Fox 45, both teams played one man short during the first half to memorialize Tyquis and Jaquis.

Also on Sept. 24, city firefighters went around the southwest Baltimore neighborhood where the Manigos lived to install smoke detectors.

Arbutus Althetic Association established a fund to raise money for the Manigo family. Donations for "The Manigo Family Fund" can be made at or mailed to: Chesapeake Bank of Maryland's Arbutus Branch located at 5424 Carville Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21227.

Baltimore City Fire Department spokesperson Kevin Cartwright said the cause of the fire on the 600-block of South Pulaski Street has not been established.

"The cause of the fire is undetermined and is still under investigation," he said.
