Single for Valentine's Day in Arbutus? There's an App for That

A new app, that allows users to meet nearby singles anywhere on earth, is catching on.

What do tax breaks, car insurance rates and Valentine's Day have in common?

They discriminate against single people.

But a new app shows how someone singled out can find strength in numbers.

SinglesAroundMe allows users to meet singles from 100 feet to 100 miles of their location anywhere on earth, said Hattie Sellick, the company's media contact, via email.

"SAM is a fun app that is spreading quickly around the world," Sellick said. "The app is bridging the gap between our digital world and real-life. It is allowing busy people to meet other singles in real-life rather than hiding behind a computer screen like traditional dating sites."

CBS News was in London recently to interview the company's founder, Chris Klotz, for a program to air around Valentine's Day, Sellick said.

Additionally, the app - which can be downloaded on iTunes and for Blackberry - was featured on CBC's “Smartphone Connections.”

"The app downloads have now skyrocketed to a run rate of approximately 80,000 per month and we anticipate over 1 million new singles will join this year," Sellick said.

On the company's website, Klotz writes, "In most cities worldwide, you can now find users" of SAM.

Registration is free. Premium services, which allows for the sending of messages, are offered at $2.95 per month or $19.95 per year.

"We meet people when we’re out and about, not when we’re stuck at home behind a computer," Klotz states on the site. "I know that my single friends are enjoying the app and based on feedback from users worldwide, others are too."
