Local Groups Lose Tax-Exempt Status

IRS automatically revokes charitable status for failure to file.

The Internal Revenue Service has revoked the tax-exempt status of 275,000 charitable organizations, including several in the greater Arbutus area, for failing to file legally required reports three years in a row.

On Wednesday, IRS released a list of organizations that lost tax-exempt status at the agency's web site. Revocation is automatic when documents are not filed with the IRS after a third consecutive year.

Contributions to these groups are no longer tax-deductible.

The IRS notes that some of the organizations on its revocation list are inactive, and in other cases the agency does not have a working mailing address for the group. Many on the list are still active and operational.
