It's a Tie! Hottest June 21 on Record

We haven't seen temperatures this high for nearly 90 years.

Forget the "heat index," or the "humidity." According to the National Weather Service, the regular old mercury-thermometer-temperature outside hit 100 degrees at BWI yesterday.

How do you beat the heat? Popsicles? Ice cream? Swimming? Or are you one of the few who revels in it? Let us know in the comments!

The normal daily high temperature on this day of the year is 85 degrees, according to the forecastes. The record high of 100 degrees was set in 1923.

With the heat index -- a measure of temperature that includes humidity to more accurately predict how hot it feels -- yesterday's temperature reached about 105 degrees.

That's cause for caution.

NWS has issued a heat advisory and is warning everyone to look out for heat-related illnesses -- not just senstive groups. If you are spending any extended period of time outside, take it easy, drink lots of water, and take frequent breaks.

The Howard County Health Department has also issued some tips for residents trying to beat the heat:

  • NEVER leave children or pets unattended in a parked car or other hot environment.
  • If you must be out in the heat, wear light-colored, light-weight, loose-fitting clothing, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Increase your fluid intake; drink non-alcoholic and caffeine-free liquids.
  • Check on elderly friends, family and neighbors who live alone.
  • If possible stay out of the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Be aware of the symptoms of heatstroke (dry red skin, convulsions, disorientation, delirium and coma) and heat exhaustion (extreme weakness, muscle cramps, nausea, or headache, possible vomiting or fainting).

If you don't have access to air conditioning at home, try the or , the or , or just pop into a retail store and do some window shopping.
