How Awful! Comic to Bring Terrible Evening to Arbutus

Lansdowne native Tim Young taking last stand at Hollywood Theatre on April 13.

Writer and comic Tim Young is doing something that hasn't been in Arbutus in at least a decade--a live performance at the . On April 13, Young and his cohorts will present a one-time event, "Terrible Stories About Terrible People."

A 1998 graduate of , Young received his undergraduate degree at , and earned his law degree at University of Baltimore in 2006.

Young was saved from a career in law by his wits--a sharp sense of humor honed in venues including Caroline's on Broadway, the New York Comedy Club and UCB's Comedy Death Ray in Los Angeles. He's frequently seen as a talking head on such television programs as Fox News' "Red Eye" and RT's "The Alyona Show." Young is also a contributor to Huffington Post and Patch.

We sat down with Young to ask him a few questions.

How would you describe your comedy?

Honest. What I say on stage is what people think, but are generally afraid to say. I don’t pull punches. I heard an audience member say “that was so wrong, but it was so right,” once at a show. That’s kinda where I like to be. My stuff is borderline offensive….that is that it’s only offensive if you aren’t honest with yourself about the world.

Why have you chosen this career rather than practice law? Would you have been unhappy, or just a snarky lawyer?

I would have been an unhappy, snarky lawyer. I could live the stereotypical American Dream and not be happy at all. I could never imagine practicing law and hustling over 40 hours a week. Don’t get me wrong, I know people do it and love it, but it’s just not me. I would be so miserable if I did that for a living.

Why are you doing this show in Arbutus, at the Hollywood Theatre?

It’s my home. I grew up in Baltimore Highlands and went to Arbutus Middle. The Hollywood is a staple of my community and I consider it an honor to be able to be on the marquee there. It’s just something I always grew up with and it’s so cool to be able to perform there…and be the only stand-up comic to ever do so. It’s a weird feeling honestly.

What's so funny about terrible people?

What isn’t funny about terrible people? I think everyone is a terrible person in one way or another, nobody’s perfect…and by the end of the show, when you find yourself agreeing with some of the things that I say…because you won't agree with all of them, you’ll realize that you’re just as terrible as someone like me.

I have had the unfortunate ability to attract crazy people in my life. There have been a pile of incidences where I’ve found myself saying “WHAT?!?!? Or REALLY?!?!?” and laughing at the unbelievableness of the situation….that’s a word….unbelievableness. I promise that people will cringe and laugh along when I recount those stories.

You can hear one of these types of stories online from the Stoop Storytelling show I did a while back.

What's next in store for you?

Well I’m actually doing a couple of shows this week in L.A. before I fly back to Baltimore. I’m becoming the managing editor of an up and coming political publication in Austin, which is pretty fun. I’ll be splitting my time between there and L.A. for awhile and continuing to work on developing my comedy as well as scripts for TV.

You can follow Young on Twitter at @TimRunsHisMouth. "Terrible Stories About Terrible People" is at 9 p.m. on April 13. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Hollywood ticket window or online at timyoung.eventbrite.com.
