Arbutus Area Battered by Storm

Homes in Riverview had roofs ripped off and areas of Halethorpe were flooded by severe storms that battered southwest Baltimore County on Thursday evening.

Tar paper and plywood was scattered in the common front area where the roof was ripped off a seven-unit block of homes on the 3000-block of Bero Road in Riverview.

"It was a big noise," said Lorraine Lawson, one of the residents displaced by the incident.

The Baltimore Sun reported that a home nearby on the 900-block of Catawba Court also had a roof ripped off.

The area aroud Bero Road in Riverview appeared to have been hit with severe winds, with trees snapped over and large limbs scattered across sidewalks and streets.

"We heard it hit the back of the house real hard," said Melanie Mondshour.

"I went to use the bathroom, and the next thing I know the skylight is leaking," said her boyfriend, Harris Stones.

Crews from English Consul and Landsdowne volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

According to a management company representative who asked not to be identified, the displaced residents are being attended to by the Red Cross and will be housed in temporary accomodations until the building is repaired.

Halethorpe was struck by flooding that inundated several streets with deep water. At around 8:45 p.m., fire department crews were dispatched to assist a vehicle that had been stranded in water flooding Halethorpe Avenue.

Selma Avenue was also flooded in the area around Halethorpe Farms and Hollins Ferry roads.
