Free Cell Phones

free cell phones

So...here's the story...earlier today I went to the CVS located on Hollins Ferry Road in Lansdowne. As I drove by I noticed some tents set up on the lot of a now vacant business next to the CVS. As I was waiting in line to check out a woman came in announcing that anyone with benefits could get a free cell phone, they were giving them away !!!

Because my inquiring mind always wants to know, I went over to the location to see what was up. I very nicely asked the young woman seated at the table about the program. Who was funding it, what did I need to qualify etc.

Well folks.. in order to qualify you have to receive "benefits." When I asked why only people with "benefits" were qualified she replied in a highly sarcastic tone "because Obama da  President that's why!!"

I also might add that behind the tables a Baltimore County Police Officer was standing practically at attention.. I am assuming to guard the cell phone event. He looked perfectly delighted to be there by the way (sarcasm).

Now.. I know I am going to get some interesting feedback, but I just have to ask. What is wrong with this picture? Our community has been suffering due to the high influx of section 8 housing and the criminal activity that has come with it. The shopping center where this giveaway is occurring used to be the place where everyone in the neighborhood felt comfortable to shop. We supported the local Mom and Pop businesses. Ask a Senior Citizen why they don't shop there anymore. I will tell you why...they don't feel safe. they are afraid, they have seen drug transactions take place right before their very eyes, I have witnessed it myself !! The irony is our tax dollars can't be spent on posting a police officer there, but yet they can use valuable time to stand guard for some of the people that are contributing to the downfall of the community. This is not a negative statement about the Police Department.. believe me I have heard the stories. Even they aren't safe in Circle Terrace where about 75% of all crime in the area originates.

I suppose some of my liberal aqaintences will call me unsympathic even a racist. I have heard it all before.. no thats' not who I am, I believe that help should be offered to those in need. But, when does it end? Our tax dollars are being spent on things like free cell phones? Guess what folks, when is enough, enough? If you are going to give cell phones away.. how about asking the recipients to give something back to the community in return? We sure could use the help as Community Activists... wanna help pick up the litter that lines the streets.. wanna join Citizens on Patrol, I know you have the free time ...wanna volunteer at the local schools or help the homeless ?

Sorry...but I have had enough of giving and giving while my taxes go up and my property value plummets. I have had enough of my community declining. By the way .. I have an inexpensive pay as you go cell phone ... thats all my retired military, never taken a handout, hard working husband and I can afford. Wow...I remember when we first got married and were living on a military salary...(poverty level) and we couldn't afford a phone. So guess what? We had to use a pay phone and when I misssed my Mom and Dad too much they let me call collect !!

So...is it  just me or is everyone else ready to say we are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore ???

Here are the facts.... Stand Up Wireless www.standupwireless.com

This is a federal program...NO BILLS TO PAY....free cell phone and activation.. including texting, long distance 100 anytime minutes, 100 text messages and all given at the taxpayers expense.. I guess we should feel like Santa Claus !!

I think I need a cool drink now to cool me off.......  :)
