I'd say it was in support of our freedom to speak one's mind without fear of retaliation from tyrannical elected officials.
John T. August 2, 2012 at 03:52 pm
Beautiful to see the impact of protesters and boycotters. I waited in the drive through line for 25 minutes to place my order, because they were that busy. Usually, I would not wait in a line that long, but this time I enjoyed it. And for some reason, my #2 meal tasted better than ever. It sure is refreshing to watch the Owner of Chick Fil-A (a privately held company) speak his mind. Meanwhile, we have to listen to liberals like Chicago Mayor Rham Emmanuel speak against this company's social morals. What nerve! Coming from the most corrupt political machine in the country! There is no level that these low-life politicians go! Just another poitician, I'm sorry, "public servant" that rakes in millions for himself and the sheep follow.
John T. August 2, 2012 at 03:57 pm
Sean. Unfortunately, Chick Fil-A is privately held company, because if it wer publicly traded, I'd be a stockholder. The man's business is a moneymaker, no matter righty or not.
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 08:11 pm
Chuck, where do I say it is a publicly traded company? I said "if I were a share holder...". The word "if" has can be used several ways, including "...may be used to indicate suppositions or hypothetical conditions...". You know, "if elephants had wings they'd be dangerous" type statements. Of course elephants don't have wings, but IF they did...
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 08:14 pm
Lorna, I can't say that I understand why calling a public figure a "clown" is so offensive to you, but I am not here to battle with anyone, especially you, so I will call the CEO of Chick-Fil-A a more Biblically correct "fool". (" but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
– Matthew 5:22 [KJV] ")
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 08:16 pm
John T, again (as I said to Chuck), I never said Chick-Fil-A was a publicly held company. I said "if I were a stock holder...".
If the left of this country stops eating at Chick-Fil-A I don't see how the guy is going to run his business with just the far right eating there. I personally think it was a stupid move and "if I were a stock holder..."
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 08:19 pm
Yes, Bill, the left sacrificed and slept out in the elements in protest while the tight right bought junk food and wolfed it down. What was their battle cry? "Rise up and sit down and eat!"
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 08:37 pm
The supporters of Chick-fil-A confuse freedom of speech with good business practices. I just don't see how offending a good chunck of the American public makes good business sense. Sure, the lines were packed today, but what about tomorrow. Are all of you people going to eat that junk every day?
Chuck August 2, 2012 at 08:46 pm
"If" you had your facts in order at the outset, you would realize that "if" you were a shareholder , you would be outvoted and your opinions silenced by the other members of the Cathy family.
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 08:50 pm
Chuck, I do have my facts in order. What are you talking about? The man is a clown (or, for Lorna, a fool), in my opinion.
Mike McAuliffe August 2, 2012 at 08:56 pm
The protesters to Mr. Cathy's spoken words seem to be condemning exactly what they have been promoting for years...freedom of speech. Haven't they been yearning to come out of the closet and profess their true inner feelings without fear of persecution from society and companies. GLB's have finally gotten comfortable speaking freely about their sexuality. I'm glad for their happiness. They no longer have to feel caged. But hey, what this...these same folks are now demanding that someone else stifle up because they don't like his thoughts and words. Shame on them. Their actions make many people want to shove them back in the closet. I didn't hear anything about the company's policies on gays, because they have no policies against gays. Did I miss a news story about a gay person not being served a chicken sandwich or something? Did Mr. Cathy turn a fire hose on a gay person. I'll have to google that story.
Sean Tully August 2, 2012 at 09:27 pm
Mike, I'm not sure anyone is telling Cathy to not speak his mind. I think the folks who are angry by his statements are saying that they will not eat at his establishment because of his views. Just because we have the freedom of speech doesn't mean everyone has to sit silent while we speak.
RARE MARYLAND INDEPENDENT August 2, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Sean- Solyndra would be a better bet for you to invest in. Chick-fil-A is getting this support is because of how to treat their customers. The people who work there are the very friendly, they always take care of people. The POSITIVE values of Mr. Cathy are helping a generation of young people OF ALL COLORS learn the importance of working hard and the proud feeling one gets from working hard, being part of a team, and moving up so one can reach your potential.
The contrast between Chick-Fil-A and McDonald's, where you can look at the person at the register for 5 minutes before they speak or KFC, where I was told one time "We ain't got no chicken" is amazing. But don't worry, I am sure the left has something evil planned for their day tomorrow.
Mike McAuliffe August 2, 2012 at 11:33 pm
Sean,
I believe you are misunderstanding the protestors' plan. Many have planned a same sex kiss-in at Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide. I believe that their plan is to hang around, or even in the restaurants, kissing each other to the point of making a scene in mass. I'm sure the ultimate goal is to disrupt the business. You have confused their plans with yesterday's silent movement of the supporters...and the was to support free speech.
John T. August 2, 2012 at 11:39 pm
Sorry for misreading your comment, but the "if" in your case is irrelevant since you cannot be a shareholder in Cick Fil-A. If the left wants to stop eating at Chick Fil-A, there would be more for us "righties" and less wait. I'm all for it!
Mike McAuliffe August 2, 2012 at 11:45 pm
Sean,
You are right. They are not telling Cathy to stay silent. They are telling him that if his speech doesn't liken to theirs they will cause disruption to his business. The Wall streeters tried the same tactics, but they didn't have the wherewithal to follow through. Most of the followers were just a bunch of wanna-be hippies that felt cheated by their college that didn't hand them a job upon their lackluster graduation. They missed Woodstock and need a cause. The Wall Street suits are still sitting at their desks, but the Wall street sitters are gone. Just like the Kiss-ins... Next week Chick-fil-a will be open for business while the Kiss-ins are in their dorms looking for the next executive who dares speak their mind.
Chuck August 2, 2012 at 11:51 pm
"If", in your rush to condemn Dan Cathy, you had noted the fact that Chick-Fil-A is privately held, your opinion wouldn't appear so misinformed. Now you are reduced to name calling. How mature.
Sean Tully August 3, 2012 at 12:22 am
Chuck, I didn't rush to condemn the Chick-Fil-A clown, I've been condemning him since he first made is idiotic statement.
Sean Tully August 3, 2012 at 12:23 am
Mike, I haven't mentioned anything about the Kiss protest so I'm not sure how you could say such a thing.
Sean Tully August 3, 2012 at 12:25 am
John T., yes, I can not own stock in the company but I can stay away from the establishment even more than I already do. I think I've eaten Chick-fil-A twice in my life.
Stiffy McDermott August 3, 2012 at 01:08 am
Sean, do you support companies being publicly castigated by elected officials with threats of banishment from cities? That is what is at issue here. It's completely unAmerican to seek to use the force of government to threaten companies with whom a mayor may disagree with politically.
From what I hear Chick Fil-A has superb business practices. They're restaurants are clean and the staff is always courteous.
Stiffy McDermott August 3, 2012 at 01:10 am
People have every right to not eat there because they disagree with the personal beliefs of the owner. It should end there.
These Stalinist liberals are just exposing their heretofore latent fascism.
John T. August 3, 2012 at 01:27 am
Sean, I know Mr. Cathy would be more accomodating to your kind in his restaurants, but I myself am glad that you don't eat there. It never ends with you and the rest of your kind. Too predictable, lets see, gay marriage-check, Illegal immigration-check, illegals receiving benefits such as in-state tuition-check, gun control-check, raising taxes on other people to pay for all of this crap-check, and any other goofiness that you can side w/goofy you are all over it. Amazing!
John T. August 3, 2012 at 01:34 am
I like it. Another guy for political correctness. Let the politicians worry about that, their great at saying what they think the sheep want to hear. Is it good business practice to lie when you are asked for your opinion or is it impressive to say what you mean. I think we have seen that the latter works much better.
John T. August 3, 2012 at 01:41 am
Oh. and I forgot - intollerance for people who disagree and voice their opinion concering the above mentioned issues are to be responded to with name calling, kiss-ins, sabotage and any other attacks possible - check
Mike McAuliffe August 3, 2012 at 01:53 am
Sean,
I didn't say that you mentioned anything about the Kiss protest. Your comment "I think the folks who are angry by his statements are saying that they will not eat at his establishment because of his views". Your quote is untrue. A lot of folks that are angered by his statement are planning a same sex Kiss Day at his establishments. Though some people that disagree with Cathy vowed simply to stop patronizing his business, there are the more aggressive protestors who are planning and participating in the Kiss Day (certainly with hopes of disrupting his business). I am not speaking against the non-patronizers. I'm speaking against the Disrupt Day protestors. Please understand my comments correctly. I'm not a fast typer and explaining a very clear comment to you twice is time consuming. You seem to be a somewhat sharp guy, but your off kilter today.
Mike McAuliffe August 3, 2012 at 02:18 am
Sean,
Do you acknowledge that a Kiss Day is planned for tomorrow by protestors? And 2) do you condone that plan?
Mike McAuliffe August 3, 2012 at 02:24 am
Sean,
I think the Patch provides a terrific free service and medium which facilitates good debates and an opportunity for readers to comment unfiltered and unedited (for the most part), but generally I don't join in the conversations with anonymous people. Though It seems you and I disagree on most everything, I do respect you for having the coconuts to use your real name.
Lorna D. Rudnikas August 3, 2012 at 03:38 am
Ah, come on Sean, why would Mr. Cathy's statement offend the so called "good chunk" of American public. It is his belief...and so stated. My understanding is that his company is very effective in bringing together employees of all races, religions and national origins..treats them well, exposes them to good business practice and gives back to the community in positive ways. Certainly "clown" or "fool" does not apply. By the way Sean...I notice that the word "fool" is being bantered about very often lately..almost a signature statement. No matter your beliefs, I am surprised to hear you use it.
Lorna D. Rudnikas August 3, 2012 at 03:53 am
Kiss In??? Kiss In???? Now isn't that the cutest. most darling little ole response?? So much dignity, so much class, so much education, so much fabulous..absolutely fabulous respect for what ever is being promoted. Now won't that be just the sweetest exhibition of what your true focus might possibly be...trying to blur the freedom of speech issue while you are at it. Oh well, I suppose you are just trying to be sweet...but you are just so, so crass!!! Oh, go ahead.. do your thing......if you must!!!
