BWI Reports New Passenger Record in July

Think you saw and heard more planes than usual flying overhead this summer? It's quite possible that you did.

More than 2.2 million passengers passed through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI Marshall) airport in July, which was the airport's busiest month ever.

Gov. Martin O’Malley announced in a Sept. 4 press release that BWI Marshall set a new record: 2,222,329 commercial passengers used the airport—a 0.8 percent increase over the previous monthly record set in July 2011 with 2,205,035 passengers. 

“This new record represents the steady growth and success that BWI Marshall has experienced,” said O’Malley in the release.

“The airport is an important resource that supports jobs, transportation and tourism throughout the region," said O'Malley. "We will continue working hard to meet the needs of travelers throughout Maryland, the National Capital region, and the world.”

Some highlights from BWI Marshall:

• Southwest Airlines, the largest airline at the airport, served 1,294,533 passengers in July.
• International passenger traffic increased 17.3 percent to 70,376 passengers.
• Condor Airlines started flights to Frankfurt, Germany in early July.
• On Thursday, Spirit Airlines is set to start service to Dallas/Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale, FL.
