An Open Letter to the Residents of District 12:

I’m writing this blog post to inform my friends and neighbors here in Southwest Baltimore County that I am officially running to represent Maryland’s 12th Legislative District in the House of Delegates.

If you haven’t heard, Delegates Liz Bobo from Columbia and Steve DeBoy and Jimmy Malone from Arbutus have announced their retirements at the conclusion of their current terms in January. 2015.   With the retirement of all three delegates comes the opportunity for citizens to elect brand new representatives to problem solve and develop solutions to some of the most pressing issues confronting Maryland and our local communities.

I’m a lifelong District 12 resident who grew up in a working class family and attended our local public schools in the Lansdowne community and graduated from UMBC; the first in my family to earn a college degree.

After college I worked in health policy for a national medical specialty society and then as executive director of a state-based trade association.  Along the way I became the president of my community association, chair of the local educational advisory council, an officer of the community and police relations organization, and an active participant in the civic affairs of Southwest Baltimore County.

Last year, with the support of family and friends, I endured rigorous clinical treatment as I battled a rare form of cancer. I assure you that conquering cancer has given me a new perspective on life and reinforced for me the need to advocate for quality and accessible healthcare services.  I am healthy, grateful to be in remission, and ready for public service.

I believe this country, and particularly Maryland, which was founded by those seeking refuge from religious persecution, was established on a simple idea: That every person deserves to be treated fairly, by each other, and by their government.  I’ve spoken to people from across Southwest Baltimore County and Eastern Howard County – hard working people from Arbutus to Columbia – who want to see Annapolis work harder for them.  I am ready for the challenge

You can always count on me to fight for small business, seniors, veterans, and for you – to ensure the constituent service you need and expect.

Together we will create and save jobs. We will get people back to work by rebuilding our infrastructure; creating a 21st century energy economy and financing innovations that will stimulate job growth.  In our ever-changing job market we must fund workforce training collaboration between businesses and community colleges to train and prepare workers, including our returning veterans.

Education Week magazine has ranked Maryland #1 in public education for an unprecedented five years in a row.  However, there is still more work to be done.  So together, we’ll craft public policies which prepare our citizens for high-skilled, good-paying jobs.

We will work to provide quality accessible healthcare services and improve the health of citizens statewide.  This includes expanding access to medical facilities and mental health care.

We must eliminate the backlog of road repairs and invest in our transportation infrastructure.

Growing up in a middle-class household that respected hard work and integrity, I know the value of a dollar and fiscal responsibility. In Annapolis, I will ensure that nobody is unfairly burdened with unreasonable taxation and will make the smart decisions about budget priorities and stand up to special interests. We can and will strengthen our middle class and expand economic opportunity.

Public service is an honor given in trust.  And that trust must be earned each and every day.  That’s exactly what I intend to do.

If you live in the district and have a question in the days ahead please go to my website at http://baileyfordelegate.com/ or email me directly at Brian@BaileyforDelegate.com

I hope you’ll join me to fight for fairness and ensure continual progress for District 12 and all of Maryland.  Thank you and I look forward to meeting you in the weeks and months weeks ahead.
